Best Husband in the World=Andrew
Since we will be travelling and so on on my actual birthday this Saturday, my wonderful Andrew decided to make today my unofficial birthday. I woke up to find the dining room table with a Happy Birthday banner, beautiful flowers, a basket full of presents, and a cinnamon roll with a candle. I felt all warm and fuzzy seeing the wonderful set up he had done while I was getting ready for work.
I received a wonderful spread of presents. I had everything from candies and batteries for our long trip to some amazing stuff like a gorgeous frame for my Davidson diploma, a gift certificate to a local spa, and tickets to see Mikhail Baryshnikov perform tonight! Wow! Wow Wow Wow. Even the card got me: "So caring, so loving, so beautiful" I couldn't help but get a little teary eyed.
I most certainly have the best husband in the world. It has been impossible to wipe the smile off my face all day!

What random object from the 80's are you?

You're a Rubik's Cube!
God you're annoying. Only the really smart kids who
played dungeons and dragons too got you. Many
took you apart and put you together. They
coudln't figure you out. No one can that's why
you're so annoying, and you don't budge to help
at all and just when we think we got you
figured out we turn you around and realize we
don't. Many might have taken a hammer to you.
Many throw you up against the wall after trying
forever. You suck!

Lucky randomly developed an allergy to something he's walking in apparently. I noticed a few days ago that one of his front paws was getting pink and he was licking it from time to time, and eventually it got so that he interrupted his own walks every five seconds or so to lick it. Vet time. (Once again, one of the vet assistants who has never seen Lucky before immediately stated that he is part Shar Pei, which continues to baffle me) The vet said that he developed an allergy, so Lucky got an allergy shot and is on two medications now for the next two weeks. I thought mutts weren't supposed to have these problems! Anyway, in addition to that, he put some gunk on his paw and wrapped it up in tape so that Lucky wouldn't keep licking it, which eventually would make it worse.
Now Lucky has turned into a drama queen. He is limping around on three legs. There is nothing about that paw that seems like it would be painful to me. It's just wrapped in tape is all! So he's hobbling around the house. When we take him on walks, he gets all sorts of sympathy from our neighbors. Poor brave soul! Even when he's sitting around the house, he sits with that paw raised. I must admit it is somewhat pathetically cute, though. I can't help but giggle as he hops around.

I had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend. Couldn't have had a better time, I think.
Friday was just a hanging out with Andrew night. Very nice. No further details will be provided.
Saturday we ran a few errands here and there and were pretty lazy the rest of the day until around 9pm where we met some of Andrew's friends at Dirty Nelly's, an Irish Pub and pretty much the only downtown bar I tolerate. The music this time was decided less Irish than previous times, but we stayed long enough to hear "What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor?" THREE times. Still fun to dance around to, so I didn't care! Our little group played pool, and I was surprised by how well I played since I've always been mediocre at best. Andrew and I were even approached for a game by two guys who look like they must sleep under the pool tables at night. We obliged. They beat us, of course, but it was happily not a blow out, and I sunk a respectable number of shots.
Sunday was kind of a work day at home. We got a lot done, but it's never as much as we hope. It was still fairly productive. We had a pleasant evening and rented Legally Blonde, which was actually quite a fun movie. We are now looking forward to the sequel.
Monday, now that was FUN, FUN, FUN. We spent all day at the beach with my theatre friends, and I have the sunburn to prove it. We drove out to St. Augustine Beach about an hour and a half away, and it was surprisingly not crowded at all. We basically had a whole area of the beach to ourselves. We alternated between the water, and our little spread of towels, snacks, beer, and stereo playing Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett, and (of course, since I was there) DMB. The waves were awesome. There were several surfers there having a blast. I spent most of my time jumping over the waves, which was sooooo fun, but a few times the waves were just too big to jump over and the crest would come crashing down onto my head. Still so fun (except for one that completely knocked me off my feet and had me swirling around in all directions for a few seconds, but not even that bothered me too much). Things got a little interesting later on in the day after the beer was setting in a bit, and I saw many more body parts of my friends than I ever expected to see.
On our way out, the sand was so soft that pretty much ever car had a hard time getting out of the sand. Some cars were half hour projects to get out. Ours, fortunately, just needed a shove or two. The front wheel drive helped, and I've driven on sand many a time (and been hopelessly stuck a time or two), so I know the basic techniques.
This was basically the last time I'd be hanging out with my friend Jon before he moves away to Baltimore. Very sad. I'll see him again on Wednesday when I see him in his show at GCP, but that's it! Jon is basically the reason I have any friends here in Gainesville at all, so I'm definitely sad to see him go. He hosted weekly parties at his place, but now I have been nominated to carry the party hosting torch. I said I would as long as I wasn't expected to hold them on a weekly basis. I can't even imagine!! Bon voyage, Jon!

Oh yeah, also in response to Lane's "shout out," the whole parallel universes with every possible outcome is something I think about all the time. I had no idea it was an official theory. The vast majority of the time, when something doesn't work out my way, I see how it was the best possible outcome for me sometimes years later. I remind myself of that when I get too down. I think I'm the luckiest Rosalie out there, living it up for all the other poor Rosalie's in other universes. I also may not be far enough in to know for sure, though. I could get run over by a bus this afternoon and have some other lucky bitch continue on with all my stuff.
I wonder if the universes intersect so that I'm living one of the best possible Rosalie lifes and that the homeless people I see have me shining their shoes outside of their Fortune 500 companies somewhere else right now. Who knows?

One quick post, Lane made the good point that it's a little annoying to have the pop-up responses rather than responses within the main window. Anyone who wants to participate in any of the stuff I'm posting further than what a "shout out" allows, go ahead and let me know, and I can add you as a "member" of my blog. Shout outs are still fine by me, though. Which ever you prefer...

In response to Lane's "shout out" on yesterday's philosophical ponderances...
I admit, I was a little surprised to hear that you liked the God possibility the best, because I don't believe we've ever had any sort of God talk before. But anyway, you're right, and yesterday's thinking reaffirmed some things in my head. Like most people, I went through a bit of an atheist phase because I tend to overthink things. I thought of a million reasons for God not to exist. There are just so many reasons why it makes no sense for there to be a God. One day, I realized that my "deep" thinking as to why God couldn't possibly exist was actually too superficial. I sat and I thought and thought some more, and I realized that there are countless reasons why God doesn't make sense, but it hit me that nothing made sense without the existence of a divine power.
I came to this conclusion not even through emotion or faith, but through logic and science, the very means most use to refute God. I thought about all my science classes. A question as simple as why is it hot in the summer and cold in the winter leads to a relatively simple answer: because the Earth rotates around the sun at an angle. That made sense enough to me for a while until I began to wonder what makes the Earth rotate around the sun? Why are we at an angle? Once again, I was met with a resonable answer: because of the Sun's gravitational pull, etc. That was good enough again for a while, but then I wondered how gravity actually works if it's not magic? Well, so on and so forth. I took Physics and AP Physics and loved those classes because i was hungry to find logical answers to all these questions. I learned all about how a larger object attracts a smaller object, all the reasoning behind it, etc, which I won't bore anyone with. As terrible as I was at math, I was all over Physics because I loved having the world around me explained. (I even got a higher score on the Physics SAT II than in any other SAT subject!!)
The more I thought, however, I realized that every answer I received led to another question. Usually I was able to receive an answer to this question, but eventually, I had a question that no physicist is able to answer: Why? To use the example, why do all the laws explaining gravity exist? Why does mass exist? Why do forces exist? The endless string of questions in response to any answer I can think of always eventually leads to the same "why?" Why do these laws exist? Why can the world be explained mathematically? Why are there set rules to everything's existence? The answer I found to fill in that void was God. If any question in the world always eventually leads to one single "Why?" I don't believe it's illogical to find one single answer.
The nature of God is a question I am still working on. How much of a hand does He have in my own life? Is He a caring God? Is He a vengeful God? Does He even possess any human attributes such as these characteristics I question? I'm not sure, but I know He exists, and everyday I think about the world, I feel I come to know Him a little better.
Ok, long tangent. As to how it relates to Lane's "shout out," well, one of the reasons I used to have for dismissing God's existence was that He seemed too convenient. It seems too comforting to believe in God in a world that can be so cruel sometimes. I figured humans developed God to make themselves feel better and not have their lives be meaningless. Well, in relation to my "philosophizing" yesterday, I am very happy that I do not need for God to exist in order to feel comfort within my own existance. I don't need for Him to give me any sort of meaning. I believe in God for unselfish reasons, and I feel that strengthens my faith in His existence.
Anyway, I'm not meaning to get into a whole God debate or anything. Just wanted to share my thoughts...
Wow, is this all too deep for a blog?? I don't know, but whatever, it's my blog and I get this way sometimes. One minute it's American Idol, the next minute is "Why are we here?"

The soft padding support I have for my wrists against carpal tunnel syndrome on my desk makes an excellent forehead rest. If only I didn't have to worry about people barging in on my little moment. I've only been able to enjoy it for a few seconds at a time. Then I worry if it will leave a tell-tale mark when I lift my head back up and pretend I was working all along. So nice, though...

I had lunch today with Andrew at Cici's Pizza. All-you-can-eat pizza and salad? I'm in! While we were there, we saw the guy with the strangest mohawk I've seen in a long while. First of all, it was very, very wide, about the width of his face. It was very, very tall, probably as tall as his face, and in the back, it had the added bonus of an added on mullet. Nice touch. He caused quite a ruckus within Cici's as he walked around the parking lot. "OH MY GOD! LOOK AT THAT MOHAWK!!" some girl yelled out, and we all looked, pointed, and laughed. I wonder if this was the man's goal or not.
We balanced that experience out with a nice discussion about fate. What is it exactly and does it really exist? It seems like anything when looked at in hindsight, retracing every possible step along the way, will inevitably look like fate. Every tiny decision made every day impacts so many things that we don't even understand at the time. Had Andrew and I both gotten in to our top choice schools, we would have never met. Therefore, those two college admissions offices, independent of each other and without knowing the implications, have dictated who will be born into the world, in that Andrew and I will have children some day hopefully, which would have never been possible if either one or both had made a different decision. To go further back, I wouldn't exist if my mom and my dad hadn't both snuck on to that cruise 30 years ago, and Andrew wouldn't exist had his dad taken the very lucrative and promising military career he was offered.
Was each and every decision preceeding this moment the only possible way things could have gone because we were fated to find each other and fall in love, or is our whole existence a coincidence? Either answer proves to be equally amazing to me to the point where I don't really care which is true. If it was fate, how beautiful it is that Andrew and I were meant to be in this world and how God loves us so much that He ensured every condition was right for us. Feels very conforting. If everything was a coincidence, how beautiful it is that our very existence is so fragile and how amazing is it that so many things could have gone wrong for us to have never found each other. How incredible that we will become a part of this process and impact the future of this world! Feels very powerful. Anyway you look at it doesn't seem to take away our satisfaction.
I love that we still talk this way after being together so long.

For you Davidson folk, this is an excerpt of an email that got forwarded to me through the grapevine. Our dear friend Tarik has written some Davidson friends several emails reflecting on his time at Davidson. This part is especially my favorite:
"The springs at Davidson are magical times. From the damp grounds, flowers begin to bloom. The air smells sweet and late sunsets put an exclamation point on each day. Upon reflection, Spring of 1998 holds some of the best memories during my time at Davidson. I remember being off-stage during "Our Town." The entire stage was deep blue, which signified the night. Nathan Riley was writing a letter on a raised platform center stage, while the girl of his dreams was on stage right doing her homework. The music was beautiful. His little sister was telling him a story. Each night, I listened to her, and I had no idea what she was saying, or the punch-line to the story that she emphasized in same manner each time. Each night, though, I laughed, and the moment was perfect. As part of the town choir, I got to be a part of that blue stage night. I think we all were able to make that play come to life, because each night, I was able to live in the play, regardless of where I was throughout it. Backstage, I would sit with Cara and follow the play. She was a member of the stage crew, as part of her Theater 101 requirements. As an extra, she wore the same red plaid period dress every night. It made me think of women during the turn of the century and how they wore the same clothes all the time. I'm not sure now if that's true, but I could understand why they did. I practiced Si's paper route on Davidson's main street, and I wore the same clothes when I took Alicia out after a performance."
And by the way, Tarik continues to try his hand at acting in LA and has changed his name to Tristan Welch. I'm not kidding! Check him out in the - Internet Movie Database.

Alright, so go Ruben! I'm not upset, because I loved that guy too. We haven't heard the last from Ruben or Clay. I was very happy with the show. The only upsetting thing...no more American Idol. :(
On another note, I randomly burst out into laughter last night because a distant memory suddenly jumped into my head. I was watching on CNN a story on all the commencement speeches, and I thought back to the guy we had speaking at our high school graduation. Then, the most memorable phrase of the whole speech came back to me, "CraigMaster HeadMaughn." (Not worth an explanation to those who weren't there, but to those who were, very little is as funny as that.) Heh heh...CraigMaster...

I have decided that American Idol is the topic most worthy of my first real post. Andrew and I have become completely HOOKED on this show. Tonight is the big night. Who will be the next American Idol? Since day one, I've been guessing that it was going to come down between Clay and Ruben, and I had no idea who I would vote for if it did. Clay was always my favorite, but I think Ruben has the most potential for a pop career. So, I was going to vote for Ruben until last night's performance. I was swayed to vote for Clay. My reasoning: Both will have successful careers whether they do or do not have the title of "American Idol." At this stage, I don't think producers and agents care who wins, they will go after both guys. Clay, though, seems like he's worked the hardest throughout this whole show to win, and he seems like he'd be the most thrilled to win, so hand the title to him. Ruben will do just fine without it. Both of those guys deserve it.

Hello, all! I was checking out a friend's blog, and figured that this had me written all over it. I plan on blabbing about all the randomness going on in my head and in my life. Check in when you want to be updated on my goings-on. I tend to have quite a bit of free time on my hands at work, so I predict I will be updating this rather frequently.
