Had lots of work today! I'm only working a half day tomorrow, fortunately. Actually, less than half a day because I have an 8:30 doctor's appointment. Not bad.
Have a merry Christmas, everyone!!

This weekend was magical, but like every legendary tale, there is an arch-nemesis to face and overcome, despite the odds. A foe so terrible it seems the heros can not overcome it. This weekend's enemy was Cincinnati.
Friday afternoon on our way to Rochester, we had to connect in Cincinnati. Due to bad weather, however, we ended up getting delayed about an hour and a half. Finally, they allow us to board. Just as we get in line to de-ice the plane (stupid snow), they realize that one of our auxilary power unit doors has snapped open. So, the plane gets out of the de-icing line and gets a maintenance crew out to work on it. By the time they were finished with the paperwork, over another hour had passed. We were just sitting there on the plane. Then, we ended up having to get in line for the de-icing AGAIN, to THEN take off. We ended up landing in Rochester three hours late. Shep, the founder of nancies.org (the crazy website that has fed my insanity) and native Rochester-ian (whatever), was there waiting for us the whole time. I felt awful.
But Cincinnati did not relent. It's like those movies where you think you've killed the bad guy and then all of a sudden they pop up from behind you for one last battle for your life. Since Laura (my UF student travel buddy) and I were connecting in Atlanta this time on the way down, we thought we were safe. Then, the dreaded announcement came over the PA. The flight to Atlanta was being pushed back from 5:30 to 7:00 because our plane was delayed...coming from Cincinnati!! NO!!!!!! Cincinnati caused us to miss our connection from Atlanta to Tampa. They then started to tell us that they would have to put us up in a hotel overnight because there were no flight left for Tampa. Under normal circumstances, I could have lived with this. However, I ACTUALLY had to be here today because the grades deadline is at noon. I've been busily working away all morning. It would have been awful for me to miss. So......our best option was to be rerouted to Orlando, get a cab (at Delta's expense) to Tampa to pick up the car, to then drive back to Gainesville. We had about 15 minutes to make our connection in Atlanta to Orlando. We made it, but our luggage did not. As compensation, we were able to fly first class. But still, arriving into Orlando later than we were supposed to arrive in Tampa, driving two hours to get the car to then drive another two hours back home...I got home at 4:15. Wow. I'm exhausted.
But was this all worth it?
HELL YEAH!!!!!!!
Oh my God, I do not regret one penny nor one minute of travel time. WOW!! This is hands down the best concert I have ever been to. I knew it would be, or else I wouldn't have flown across the country to see it. WOW!! Just incredible!! The whole weekend!!
First of all, it was a neat experience to visit Rochester in the winter time. It was in the 20s and snowy the whole time, but it was actually quite pleasant to me, but maybe it was because of the 50 lbs of clothing I had on!! Laura and I played in the snow like the Floridians we are. I'm glad no one else was around to roll their eyes at us!
We met a whole bunch of cool people. I mean, I had a blast. Everyone was wonderful!! Shep especially was so nice to us. He was giving us rides all over the place and making sure we were entertained. A wonderful host! Even though I technically flew up to meet a bunch of strangers, it was such a great experience! We all gathered in someone's hotel suite in the fancy Hyatt and partied. So wonderful.
And actually, leading up to that was one of the more exciting events of the weekend. Laura and I went with Shep and his girlfriend Shannon to buy all the drinks, etc. for the party. We bought massive amounts. About $190 worth! As we come back to the Hyatt, we are each carrying three to five heavy, heavy bags full of beer cans, vodka bottles, etc, etc, etc. We had no free hands between the four of us. We were asking people to help us with the doors and all that. As we approach the elevators, who do I see approaching at the same time, but TREY ANASTASIO of Phish!! He was, as you might know, one of the major artists on Dave's solo album and featured very prominently almost as a second name for this tour. So, we ended up on the elevator together. Shep asked him to press our floor number and called him "sir" as he politely asked. We were just too thrilled and smiling at each other until Shep finally spoke up and said, "Hey, we are really looking forward to tonight's show! We've been hearing the stuff from last week, and it's sounding great!" He said, "Yeah, we've been on a roll." I piped up and told him that I too was very excited about tonight's show. He then responded, "Well, I can certainly see you are prepared for it," he said, indicating our massive amounts of alcohol. We laughed as we reached our floor. On our way out, we wished him a good show. WOW! Was that ever exciting!!! I was so cool during it, even saying, "Hey man" to him as I would imagine it to be appropriate for the Phish guy. Afterwards, I was giddy! It was great!
So, showtime. WOW! Blown away. I mean, seriously, I can not describe this show. It was basically a nearly 4 hour orgasm. I was completely blown out of my mind by the tremendous energy and musicianship I was witness to. I was dancing like crazy, and the concert was relentless. It was almost too good. I was in such pain from my excessive dancing and totally exhausted and dehydrated. I kept wondering how much I could take, but it kept coming, and I kept taking it. Honestly, wow. I can't even describe what an incredible experience it was. The guy I sat with during the show has seen close to 50 Dave shows (yes, 50. This was my 9th), and he said that this definitely had to be the best show he'd ever been to. I certainly picked a winner of a show. This show, I swear, will go down in Dave history. Incredible, incredible, incredible. It started off with a few acoustic classic DMB songs with Tim Reynolds, followed by the full band from Dave's album, followed by acoustic Dave and Trey for the encore, and capped off with one last full band encore to send us off. The first acoustic set featured a #41 opener which melted my heart and almost made me cry. It also had the amazing Dancing Nancies and the touching Cry Freedom. The full band blew the lid off the place with a mix of stuff from Dave's album and all sorts of covers from Stevie Wonder's "Tell Me Something Good" to Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." Holy crap!!! Amazing, amazing, amazing stuff!! I've never seen a place so alive in my life!! Then, the encore was probably the most magical concert moment ever for me. Dave and Trey start into an acoustic "Everyday." One of the things the audience has started doing the last couple years is interweaving the lyrics to #36 into the song. Just a very sweet, simple little "Honey, honey, come and dance with me" throughout the song. The crowd was so into it, that Dave and Trey started singing backup to us, echoing our "Honey, honey." Then, they segue into Phish's Bathtub Gin, a delightful little tune that features a little OOOOOO-dooo-dooo-dooo ditty that the audience picked up on. We continued doing that, and then they just kept weaving back and forth between Everyday and Bathtub Gin with the audience filling in the gaps and them following our lead. They were so amazed they barely knew what to do. They ended the song and the entire arena continued to sing the songs back at them. They just sat there and watched us go, looking at each other and laughing. This went on forever. They could not believe it, and neither could I. It's hard to explain just how it was, but it was just truly incredible.
Ok, that's enough of my babbling. This entry has run long enough. I interspersed pictures from Laura and from someone who took pictures during the show. When I get my pictures developed, I'll post them too. All in all, despite the terrible ending, this weekend was truly incredible.

Well, my doctor ended up giving me some promising news yesterday. There is reason to be optimistic. I will still need to be monitored for a while. I have another appointment for next week, and then I'll have to set another one two weeks after that, and then go from there. It seems I'm nearing the end of my "health event" and if this is really the end, then I'm going to be ok. They just need to make sure that it's actually under control.
So, I'm breathing a sigh of relief. It's not all doom and gloom like the ER doc was having me believe, thank goodness. I'm feeling much better. Still not 100%, but I feel like a tremendous weight has been lifted from my shoulders, so I just feel so much better emotionally!
The past week has been rough. Very rough...but.......TOMORROW I LEAVE FOR ROCHESTER TO SEE MR. MATTHEWS LIVE!!!! WOOHOO!!

So I'm extremely sick, but not the normal kind of sick. I'm "girlie" sick, which is a lot worse than generic sick, I've found. I spent my Saturday in the emergency room getting poked and prodded every which way. I have go to my doctor again on Wednesday to explore things a bit more. Remember I had a little bout with something similar about five or six weeks ago. Well, yeah, it's more serious, I guess, than what they had originally thought.
Last night I got so upset about all this that I started screaming and crying that this is killing our babies. The doctors are very unsure at this point how things will turn out. I may need an operation and everything in the near future. *barf* We will see this week or next, I guess.
Not a happy camper.

Good news and bad news.
The good news is that I'm not a hypochondriac after all.
The bad news is that I ended up in the emergency room this morning. I'm ok, but this is not fun at all.

This weekend is another busy one. I think we're going bowling tonight. Then, set building tomorrow, followed by my office Christmas party (NOT looking forward to it!!). Sunday, I have to finish reorganizing my room, finish Christmas decorating, and get the house spic and span because it's the last weekend I have before having four house guests, then rehearsal that night. This weekend is going to zoom by like the last one did. I just want one day to sleep in and then hang out until dinner time in my pajamas watching boring TV.

Why do I always think I'm about to come down with something. I must be a hypochondriac. Seriously. Either that or my immune system is in that threshhold area where it is weak enough to catch everything but strong enough to fight it. I think every week for a while now, I keep thinking I'm about to get sick. I have a sore thoat today, and my ears hurt. And I'm a bit achy. God, I'm such a hypochondriac, aren't I?

Good news, we did the act again that I screwed up on Tuesday, and I rocked it. No dropped lines! Woohoo!
Last night on my way to rehearsal, the moon was the biggest I had ever seen it! I could not believe it! It was nearly full, a dusty orange color, and so low to the ground. Seriously, it was enormous. It looks like those (what I thought were) exaggerations in movies. It looked like it was hanging right over Gainesville just a few miles down the road. You could see every crater almost like 3-D. It was the most amazing site I had ever seen. I don't know what made last night different, but it was extraordinary. I was in awe of it all.
Today, Andrew turns in a paper at 5pm, and then he's done for the semester. That is good. I wish I could be done with work, too.

Someone brought in cake. Please tell me why I thought having two pieces was a good idea? I don't feel so good...
Update five minutes after posting the above:
I just overheard that the cake was made by an elementary school home ec club. Now I'm really nervous about this not so good feeling!!

Last night I had my worst rehearsal yet! UGH!! I was so frustrated with myself I could have cried. I kept dropping lines, and I just all around sucked. When I was done, I was wishing I could just ask the director to let me go home without notes because I didn't want to have the whole list of what I did wrong recounted to me. Yes, I did have a bunch of notes, and yes, I did drop a whole bunch of lines. Everyone started joking around about it, though, and it made me feel better. Actually, it made me feel a lot better to have them joke about how they had never seen my drop lines before and one of the actors even turned around to me and said, "I think I respect you more now to see that you are human like the rest of us." So yeah, I just have to shrug off that I did a very bad job last night. I just have to work the script a little harder for tonight. Hey, I'm entitled to a bad night, right?
Andrew was studying all day yesterday for a final he has today. He was over at a friend's house, but called me to ask me if I wanted to come over and watch Rich Girls at 10:30. So funny! That is a hilarious show. Much better than that stupid Paris Hilton one Simple Life. So, it was funny to drive over to watch it. It was fun, though!
I woke up this morning to a dreary, drizzly day and very disappointed to realize that it's only Wednesday when I thought for a few wonderful minutes that it was Thursday. It was even more tempting than usual to crawl back into bed and call in sick.

Less than two hours into my workday, and I already have reached my limit of aggravation. I hate so many people I work with. I mean actually hate them. They are the stupidest, most unreasonable people I've ever met.
God, I've started typing over and over what it is that has me so upset, but I can't even do it. I'm just so fed up. Is it like this everywhere? God, I hate people.

So, my Northeastern friends might be interested to know that I had to scrape ice off my windsheild this morning for the first time this season. I am sure you hate me, as I keep hearing about how you guys got buried this weekend! I watched most of the Dolphins-Patriots game and was SHOCKED at the amount of snow in that stadium!! They showed fans having to literally dig out their seats before the game. The cool image, though, was after some amazing plays (unfortunately for Fins fans like myself), the fans would throw up all this snow into the air. It was really cool to see, so it made the sting a little softer at least. I kept thinking of poor Lane in all that snow! I know NYC got pretty much the same.
Sometimes I miss winters, but this weekend was actually very satisfying weather-wise. It was clear blue skies with highs in the 50's. It was quite cool for Florida standards, but so very, very nice. We actually turned off the heater and left our windows open during the day and hung out in sweatshirts. It was nice. Then, of course, seeing what the Northeast had to deal with, well, it made me quite happy to be here in Florida!
After anticipating this weekend for an entire five days, though, it flew by before I realized it was here! Friday night, I went out to dinner with some of Andrew's friends and then we came back to watch a movie. That was the extent of the fun relaxing. I had to wake up early the next morning to help build the set (picture me with power drills and hammers and carrying around 8 ft. 2x4s). I got home in time to have to make stuffing for Andrew's prof's Christmas party. Ok, so the party actually ended being more fun than I thought. I even got to use my little tidbit about how I performed for Janet Reno in a bear costume in high school! Yesterday, I did the most extensive reorganization/cleaning my room has ever had since I moved in. Then, we got about half the Christmas decorations up, and the off to rehearsal. And last night's rehearsal sucked big time. I don't know what was wrong with us, but we all sucked really, really bad last night.
I was so busy the entire weekend! Last night I came home from rehearsal and wanted to cry to think I had to endure another 5 days before getting my next opportunity at a breather, which I'm not even guaranteed to get like I didn't this weekend. Geez! I just want to sit on the couch and veg for a couple hours! That's all I want!!

Can anyone explain to me why French numbers are so stupid? I'm sitting here doing a French translation, which I love it when I get to do! I love the language, but the numbers are so retarded. They give up at 60.
10=Dix
20=Vingt
30=Trente
40=Quarante
50=Cinquante
60=Soixante
70=Soixante-Dix (Sixty Ten)
80=Quatre-Vingts (Four Twenties)
90=Quatre-Vingts-Dix (Four Twenties Ten)
100=Cent
So, what happened to 70-99?? It just wasn't worth the effort to come up with real names for them? I'm so bad at math that I don't want to be adding and multiplying in my head when someone says Four Twenties Seventeen to figure out they're saying 97. How stupid.

One and a half hours until the weekend. It can't go fast enough!!
I have no idea what I'm doing tonight. Tomorrow, I have to do set building from 10:00-3:00. The rest of the weekend, I have to clean and organize the house since it has just been chaotic ever since my rehearsals got started, and decorate for Christmas, which should hopefully be fun! Other than that, I have no idea what else I'm doing! I just hope at some point I'm able to fit in some rest!

Here's somethign cute and fun...make your own snowflake
I had quite a prolific blogging day yesterday, which I guess is pretty much a sign of things slowing down at work. I guess it has. It's not as busy, but equally aggravating.
In other news, there was a job that opened up at UF's Center for Performing Arts doing PR. It's EXACTLY what I did in my internship at Charlotte's Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. I would have been a shoe-in. But I did not apply. I would have been an internal candidate (since my payroll comes out of the CPA rather than Theatre & Dance for some confusing reason). Being an internal candidate, I would have to let people here know that I was applying for it, and, I don't know. I was afraid to, especially since it was at the same time I was actively interviewing at Santa Fe. But, I did the next best thing, which was to call up someone there and let them know about someone else applying. She is Andrew's best friend her at UF's girlfriend who just moved down from NYC to be with him and left her cool PR job up there. So, I put in a good word for her, even though I had only met her a few times. Lo and behold, she got the job. I'm very happy for her, but I can't help but feel like I should be kicking myself because they kept bringing up to her my recommendation over and over. If my recommendation carried that much weight to them, AND I did this exact job in a bigger performing arts center, AND I was an internal candidate, AND they took someone my age anyway, well, damn, I would have been a shoe-in for sure. And it would have been perfect. Geez. I'm very happy for her, because she was having a lot of trouble finding something, but damn, I'm stupid.

I hate days when cast lists are posted up here in the office. A crowd gathers around the board, and there is a mixture of excited cheers and disappointed, bitter faces. I always used to go to look at my cast lists by myself. I'm looking at pairs coming in where one got cast and one didn't. One is going "WOOHOO!" and then, has to turn to the other and hug them or something. Ugh! Yeah, cast lists are not fun. These are the days when I realize how brutal acting is.

When it comes time to name my children, I'm really going to try not to ask anyone for advice. I think that Andrew should be the only other voter in the matter. I don't know why, but we fantasize about names all the time, and it's not too often that we agree on one. I thought of the name Nathan, and then Andrew loved it. I brought it up to my mom, and she hated it. She said it made her think of the hot dogs! Ugh! I'm tempted to say that it doesn't matter because I think no matter what we name our kids, she'll grow to love it eventually anyway.

I like this essay...written by Dave Matthews, of course...
"The Right Words at the Right Time"
By the time I was 7 or 8 years old, I had a stash of Beatles albums and paraphernalia that would put a collector to shame. I was, and still am, obsessed with music. But it wasn't until a particular family dinner and some parental wisdom from my father that I thought about music as something I could do rather than something I should appreciate.
We were sitting at the dinner table--my two sisters, my brother, my parents and I--and I was singing off-key on purpose. Dinner was sacred at our house. No matter where we were or what we were doing, we always sat down together for dinner. On that particular night, I was deliberately disrupting the meal, goofing off and annoying everyone in the process. Instead of scolding me or telling me to put a lid on it, my father looked across the table at my mother and said, "Look, he sings so well he can sing OFF-key."
What a clever complement: one part praise and one part admonition. I was a kid, so I latched on to the praise part. No one had ever told me that I could sing, and I was filled with pride. Consequently, I shut up.
My father lifted me and humbled me at the same time. It was as if he were saying, "You have a great talent, now knock it off." I stopped singing off-key and dinner resumed peacefully, but for me, everything was different. I'd been given a very important piece of information; I could sing.
Not long after that, my father died, and those words took on new importance. They weren't profound, but they had come from him, and because so much of him had faded for me, I treasured them.
Years later, I started to think about playing music in places other than my mother's living room and a big part of me was saying, "Who do you think you are to try to get up in front of people?" I was overwhelmed by doubt. I had stage fright. I wondered if writing music was ridiculous and self-indulgent, but I let my dad's words push me along. They got me thinking: "Maybe music isn't just something I like. Maybe it's what I am."
Just like I did when I was a kid, I held on to the praise in my father's words. It sounds silly now; "My dad says I can sing," but in the beginning of my career, those words offered exactly the encouragement I needed.
Today, the admonition part of my father's comment is equally profound. I use the "knock if off" part to keep me focused and grounded. I'm lucky to have a talent that I've discovered, but it's just one thing, not the only thing. When I need a boost, I remember the first part of what my dad said, and when I need a reminder that family dinners are more important than record deals, I remember the second.

I'm so sleepy! I hate that being in a show takes so much out of me. It seems unfair that I can't ditch my work to make room for what I really want to do. Stupid society. Who designed society this way, anyway? It doesn't seem to me that anyone really is happy with the way it works. Our ancestors dropped the ball somewhere, I guess. I'll bet it was the stupid Puritans who decided that things had to suck to achieve true goodness or something dumb like that.
I hate that I'm made to feel like I have no direction. I do, in fact, know very clearly what it is that I want. I am just not free to do it. So why should that mean I have to work toward other things I don't believe in? Why did I end up at the bottom rung when I decided I couldn't do anything that wasn't in line with my principles? Where did I make the bad choice? I can't think of any decision I would change in my life. And yet, after a lifetime of being told I could be anything I wanted to be, I ended up sitting at this desk transfering calls all day, making copies, typing up memos for people who don't know how to type, and getting attitude from students who feel above me. It was only a few years ago that I was at the top of the pyramid, supposedly. I mean, if I had dropped out of high school and gotten a GED, I could have ended up exactly here as well. Evidently, I did something wrong to slip down here. I just can't figure out what I did that was wrong.
But you know what, I can't sit around and feel sorry for myself, because, like I said before, this is just the way the world seems to work. It's stupid society. Had I made different decisions to make me more successful professionally, I wouldn't necessarily be happier. Ehhh, I need to stop coming back to this subject. I just need to get through a couple more years. As long as I don't stop to think about it much, it shouldn't be so bad.

Ugh. I feel so sick. Everyone in the cast has come down with this horrible illness except for me and one other guy. Since I always come down with anything that goes around, I was pretty impressed that I felt just fine as everyone lay in misery. Well, I guess it's my turn now. Bleh. Wasn't I just sick last month? I broke my longest healthy streak ever. Before last month, it had been a year since I had anything worse than a day of sniffles or something. Ick, I really don't feel very well. It's so busy here, I wonder if I'd be able to leave early at all.
Last night, I kicked butt in rehearsal. It was really the first time I felt very confident with my performance. I might actually pull this thing off! It felt very nice!
I good some good notes at the end.
Things have been crazy here at work with the end of the semester. Since I'm feeling so rotten, I'm taking this time now to finally do my blog a little better and relax a bit. I've been doing mailings for a show that starts tomorrow, preparing student evaluations, setting up the grading system, finalizing the summer schedule, etc, etc, etc. I haven't been able to even think about the fall schedule yet, which is due pretty soon. Geez, it's a crazy week.
Oh yeah, I can't believe I forgot to post anything on the UF-FSU game. What a crock! I watched the whole thing with my in-laws up in NC, and I had to really monitor my language! I'm not one to swear very much either. That game was just really enfuriating me. There was even an article in Sports Illustrated that talked about how lop-sided the refs were in that game and that FSU winning was a real injustice. Grr! Made me mad. Apparently, there was this big fight at the end of the game that I missed because I turned the TV off immediately once the game was done in disgust. Stupid Seminoles. Now I hate them even more than I used to.
I've been having quite a time with a graphics/photo/print shop here in town. I think I posted before that I had this great idea to get an old picture of my grandfather restored and blown up for my mom for Christmas. I dropped it off nearly two weeks ago. I went to pick it up Monday, and it didn't look at all like I wanted it to look. The original was in sepia colors, and they "restored" it to black and white so that it looked way too new and lost a lot of its character. I had even specified in my instructions that I wanted it sepia. So, they agreed to redo it. I go back yesterday, and the picture itself is much better, but they left this stark white border around out that I also specifically indicated I wanted to be in sepia so that it would look nice in the framing. In the meantime, today is the deadline to get this thing to the framing shop to get it done by Christmas. I got so furious with them because I had specified all these things to them before, and now my present might be late! I thought for sure I was going to the best place in town because they specialize in photo restorations and other things. They seemed very professional, but they keep screwing this up! This is the present I have been the most excited about, and I want it to be perfect! I really hope it is right today, or else there will be a lot of trouble!!
Alright then, back to work now...

Geez! What is it with me having to do all this work today?? I need a "day off" after coming back from Thanksgiving to take it easy.
So, I had a marvelous time in North Carolina. We drove up with wonderful time. We even made it up there for dinner, which was surprising. Our time there was short, but nice. It's so nice for me to be there because it all the area around Davidson, so I know it so well, and it feel like coming home almost.
The most tragic part of the trip...I found out that my beloved smoothie store...THE smoothie store above all smoothie stores...CLOSED!! Oh God! How could it be?? I was at this place every other day in college. The owners KNEW me. Then, everytime I have been back to visit since graduation, I've gone every single day and gotten their huge tub-sized smoothies to take advantage of me being up there. Seriously, it was the BEST smoothie place EVER. Now, I went to get my tub of smoothie, and there was a big sign that said "For Lease". NOOO!!!!! If my in-laws hadn't been there, I think I might have cried a bit. So sad. There are smoothies here, of course, but nothing compares to California Juice Co. smoothies. Nothing. What I did manage to say for all to hear as I stood there in front of the dark store, "This is the end of an era."
But, yes, besides that horrible realization, I had a lovely time. I'm so lucky to love my in-laws. I always have a good, relaxing time while I am there.
It was freezing cold the last two days I was there, though. When I looked at the weather, though, I realized it wasn't too far off from what it was here in Gainesville! I guess it was cold everywhere on the east coast. No snow, but the grass did get very crunchy. That's only happened two or three times since I've been here in Gainesville, so that was interesting!
Lucky loves it over there. He has a big yard to run around in with a lake to sniff (he won't dare go in it or even get a whisker moist, but it intrigues him nonetheless). When we are there or at my parents, it almost gets us feeling guilty that we can't give him a fenced yard to run around in at home. Fortunately, we have the dog park that he can cut loose once or twice a week, and a field for fun exploring on a leash. Next home, we'll have a yard for him!
The drive back was brutal. It took us seven hours to get there, and nine and a half to get back! Bleh! Fortunately, we were safe and saw no accidents at any point along the way. Just annoyingness.
Only two and a half weeks until I see Dave up in Rochester! Woohoo! Then, just a few days to Christmas. Just have this dumb work in between.
