This morning I came up with the perfect Oscar/Emmy/Tony Award speech while in the shower...
Oh my goodness! I wasn't expecting this at all! This is such a thrill. *Act surprised, gracefully wipe a small tear away from the corner of my eye*
Because this award is in recognition of a performance in which so many people had a hand, I feel humbled that my name was the only name inside that envelope. This honor is a testament to all the talent and efforts of everyone who worked on this project. Thank you to all the cast and crew of *Insert name of movie/TV show/play here,* especially *Insert name of director here,* and, of course, the members of the Academy.
Anyone who has known me for a long time, however, knows that there are four people I always thank for every performance. These are the people who helped me get to this stage, holding this award tonight, long before I ever heard of *Insert name of movie/TV show/play here* and before anyone here knew who I was.
Thank you to my brother Bobby, for inspiring me everyday of my life. Thank you to my Dad, who always supported me and pushed me to become bigger and better with every step I took. Thank you to my Mom, who was always there to catch me if I fell somewhere along the way. And thank you to my husband Andrew, whose love and understanding has been what has kept me going all along.
These are the people who made me who I am. These are the people who have always loved me and the people who I have always loved. They have shown me what was possible in this world. Where would I be without them?
Thank you.

Ashley showed me this petition online that cites shows such as Rocko's Modern Life, Salute Your Shorts, Clarissa's Life, and Doug as "old school" Nickelodeon. First of all, it's Clarissa Explains It All! Secondly, I would hardly qualify Doug and Rocko's Modern Life as "old school." Maybe they're from this guy was a kid, but the term "old school" doesn't just apply to something from a while back. To me, it means from the early days. Therefore, since I was watching good ol' Nickelodeon when it started up, old school Nick shows to me would be You Can't Do That on Television, Double Dare, etc. Things like that. Now THAT is old school, my friend.

BAH!!!! What's with this place?? Everything is perfectly designed to drive my crazy. I either have nothing to do and it bores me to tears, or I am overwhelmed with a string of people needing all these things ASAP. The last hour has been hell!!!! What gives?? Go away everyone!!!

Andrew's parents get into town this afternoon. They'll be staying until Saturday morning. I like having them, but I hope they realize that I will have zero time to play the host. I barely have enough time to cook myself dinner, let alone a presentable dinner for four. Hopefully they understand! Their room and bathroom are freshly cleaned, the living room and dining room are orderly, and I hope that's all they need from me!
This is my last week of the show, and though I have definitely had fun doing it, I can't say that I'm going to be too upset when it is done. I have so much that I've been putting off. I'm going to look more into the possibility of an e-business, possibly take some graphic design classes, look more seriously into another job, get into art again, etc.
More on the art idea, Andrew and I visited a little art shop weekend before this past one. It's supposedly the oldest artist co-op in the state, all made up of local artists. In looking around all the different stuff they had, I realized I could seriously do better than a lot of the pieces in there. Some things were awesome, but some, really, were not very good at all. I bet with some practice, if I could get back to where I was at the prime of my artistic abilities, I would be pretty much on par with most of the stuff there. Obviously I would never make a living off of it, but it might be nice to get a small, extra income to do a hobby at night and on weekends. Plus, it gives me a more real reason to get back into art. I'm always sad that I kind of left it. If I buy a whole slew of frames wholesale and frame my art, I bet I could ask for a decent amount for each piece. I'd like to experiment with watercolors, though I've never done much work in them before. from what I saw, they seemed to have the greatest commercial appeal. Charcoal would be fun too, though maybe not as appealing. Though I did do one cool painting in acrylics, I can't see myself going back to that too much. It was so difficult, even though the end result is more striking than other media in many ways. We'll see! Maybe I'll hit up Michael's this weekend.

The review of the show came out today. It was ok. Probably the least glowing review for a show I've been in that I've seen. Basically, she said it wasn't bad. I got a little sentence: As Kevin, the attractive young woman with the male name, Rosalie Esteves Preston takes a seductive turn with David and gives a companionable girl-to-girl twist to her relationship with Rachel. Eh. Companionable. I got spoiled with her "star," "beautiful," and "exquisite" comments of shows past. Oh well! Companionable is better than the adjectives I was afraid of in this role...annoying, syrupy, plastic...
Last night's performance was odd. I felt that us performers did very well, but the audience was strange. It was mostly silent compared to other audiences...except for one old lady who felt the need to comment in her regular volume on everything going on onstage. This isn't a movie, lady!! Actors have ears, and when you are 20 feet away from us, we CAN hear you. The most interesting little outburst came when one of the characters was trying to remember the name of one of my exes. I reminded him that it began with an R. He jokes and says, "Richard?... Raul?... Rasputin?" I laugh, shake my head, and say "Robert!" All of a sudden from the crowd, I hear, "Well, THAT was easy enough!!" I had to concentrate so hard not to laugh, despite the snickers I heard from the audience. I mean, I was fighting this woman the entire show! It took so much self-control not to glare out at her. She made it so hard to concentrate with her sarcastic remarks about everything we said! Ugh!
My parents and my brother are coming into town today and coming to the show tonight. Hopefully tonight goes well. We are going to be sold out! Woohoo! Hopefully this crowd will be alive!

I've been trying to find some contact info for the author of that book about me. I seriously think I'm going to write her and ask her how she came up with that name. I know it's probably just a weird coincidence, but I'm curious anyway. It's not like my name is Mary Smith here! I can't find any. I found an F Delbanco in the town she is supposed to live in. Would it be weird to send her something to her home like that, or should I send it to her publisher? Hmmm...

When I moved to my house about a year and a half ago, my new morning commute became rather pleasant (except for the first two miles of bumper to bumper). On getting past 34th Street, I drive into the natural area of campus, including a scenic drive along the shore of Lake Alice. Very nice way to start my mornings. For the past few weeks, I've been seeing several alligators swimming in the water every day. Pretty cool. I also love how on some mornings, there seems to be a mist rising from the lake, and with the sun peeking through the Spanish Moss on the trees, well, it's just beautiful. It's the best part of my mornings.
Another sight that I became accustomed to during this morning commute was to drive by a group of walking women. I learned their habits well enough so that I knew if I was running late or on time. If they were in front of the honors dorms, I was right on schedule and guaranteed to get a parking spot. If they were already walking by the woods, however, I'm running late!
This group of women started with three. I started noticing them because of one woman in particular who looked very butch despite wearing bright blue eyeshadow and doing her bangs up as if it were still 1987. She was an odd one. After making sure to check out her style everyday, I started looking at the other two. One is older, probably sixties, but she keeps pace with the other two, despite her interesting walking style which includes no arm movement whatsoever. Not even a slight swing. Her palms face straight back, and her arms hang tightly along her sides. The least interesting woman of the bunch was just your typical, frumpy, middle aged woman. Slightly frizzy hair (though not distractingly so), big glasses, wide hips.
Over the past year and a half, I've found butch woman to be the most fickle of the crew. With the progression of time, she showed up for the walking group less and less, probably favoring staying in bed. The old woman and the frumpy woman are much more faithful walkers. I hardly ever see butch woman anymore, and when I do, it's a treat! So, it's down to old woman and frumpy woman. A few times a week, however, the group consists of only one: frumpy woman. But I'll tell you, there has not been a single day that I have not seen frumpy woman.
Several months back, I started noticing something interesting about frumpy woman. The jeans she always walked in were getting baggier. I knew that these women were walking for their health as well as for the scenery, but it hit me that this was only part of frumpy woman's plan and that she was very serious about it. It seems like every few weeks, I'd notice how much baggier her jeans were getting.
Finally, in the past couple of weeks, I've noticed a truly remarkable change in frumpy woman. She is now wearing some tighter black pants for her walks, and she looks great! I would say she's lost a good 40 lbs! She also cut her hair short and is looking way less...frumpy! I keep wanting pull over one of these mornings and tell her that I've noticed a tremendous change in her, that she has done great things, give her encouragement! I bet she would feel great. I bet it would make her day, even if she feels awkward at the time. But I know I won't. I mean, I'm just not like that. I wish I would, though.

A night off last night!! Wow. What a weird feeling! I came home, took out Lucky, cooked dinner, played Solitaire, and watched TV until Lane called and we talked for quite a while. So nice to be home like that.
Andrew leaves tomorrow to visit his brother up in Ohio until Sunday. Just in time for the shows to start again. I'm going to be busy, busy, but I'm still glad he is going. He hasn't been to visit him yet, and he's been having a rough time lately, so it's nice Andrew is going to see him.
My cousin Jennifer was down in Stuart over the weekend, and my parents were able to go see her and little Robert. They said that he is definitely an adorable and sweet baby. I wish I could see him! Everyone loves him!
Have you guys heard of that new MTV show I Want a Famous Face? I haven't watched it, but I heard about it, and it sounds awful! It's people who want to look like a celebrity, so they get plastic surgery. The worst were these two twins that wanted to look like Brad Pitt. In my opinion, they ended up looking more like Hanson.

OH!! And I can't believe I forgot to post the details I've learned about the movie I'm doing.
First of all, let me just say that my role is tiny. I mean, 8 or 9 lines tiny. I am still very excited about this, however, because this is almost 100% (unless it turns out to be disastrously bad) certain to be aired on national television. The only problem is for those of you outside the Gainesville area, I can't predict when that will be. The way PBS broadcasts is that each local PBS station decides its own programming, picking from a whole list of available pieces from the central PBS station. The producer said that his last film was five years ago and he finds out about it being aired every now and then still to this day here and there throughout the country. The last one was picked up by nearly 150 affiliates, and this one will probably do the same. In addition, he takes these films to various international film festivals around the world. So this WILL be seen by very wide audiences. Very fun! Shooting begins in early May, and it should be ready for release by the end of the year.

Umm, what the hell?? Still no Nancies?? There is only so much slacking to be done without it. Damn. This is going to start messing with my head. If I actually had work that I was putting off, this all might not have been so bad. Really, though, I don't have that much work. Certainly not enough work to fill eight hours out of each day. Blehhh!
But moving on...opening week went pretty well. Fortunately, our best night was the night the reviewer came, so we have good hopes for a nice review (which comes out on Friday). Overall, this is definitely not the best show I've been in, but it's enjoyable, I think. It seems a bit uneven to me, like some scenes are way better than others. It just doesn't feel solid. I'm not terribly pleased with my own performance overall, though some nights I hit a decent stride. We'll see if any good word of mouth spreads about our show. So far, I've had two people tell me that many of us looked stiff, but that the play was still charming. Great. :
Yesterday we had a cast party at the lead actor's house after our matinee. It was loads of fun for me, mostly because I got to play with his eight month old daughter. It was so alien to me to be enjoying a little baby like that. I was never the time to melt over babies before, but this little gal was so neat, I had her in my arms for most of the time! I made all sorts of goofy faces and noises to make her laugh and bounced her around. She liked me and would even reach back out to me when someone else wanted to hold her! I want one now!! :) This biological clock thing is amazing. I was the last person on earth I ever thought would get baby cravings.
I checked the weather, and no wonder I was freezing coming into work today in a tanktop, skirt, and sandals. It's 42 degrees outside!! It's going to warm up later on, of course, but I definitely should have worn a sweater for the morning! Brrr!! Update at 2pm: It is currently 62 degrees. I should have checked the weather before dressing decidedly summery today!

Ok, it's moments like these when I wonder if I'm taking this silly job for granted. They told me here that if I work through my lunches, I'm welcome to leave at 4pm on days that I have shows. How great is that?? I didn't even ask for it. So, I'm definitely taking them up on it, especially since I almost always work through my lunches anyway.
Have a great weekend, everyone. Wish me a broken leg and/or nose!

I decided to take the morning off today. Maybe I should have taken the whole day, but felt too guilty about it for some unknown reason. It's not like I actually do anything while I'm here anyway, so I should have just sat at home instead. I feel like crap. I don't get it.
So, my final dress rehearsal was last night. We were told to invite a small audience so that we could get used to audience reactions. My boss and another prof came last night, and wouldn't you know it, the play sucked last night. This was the first time my boss had ever seen me. Oh well. He knows I've been "sick." I left at 1:30 yesterday and didn't arrive until 11:00 this morning. They still said I did the best job of the group, but I think they were just being nice, because even the adoring Andrew told me, "It was not the best I've seen you do." Oh well. A bad dress means a good run, or so they say.
Bleh, I don't know why I feel so miserable. I think it's probably the combo of the lack of sleep and running non-stop of dress week and being on the rag. Deadly combo. I will need to plan what shows I'm in in accordance to my cycle, I suppose.

I came across a "Belief-O-Matic", a little online survey that assesses what religion your beliefs are in line with the most. My "actual" religion, Roman Catholic, came in second to last, with only 20% of my answers matching the Church's teachings. (If my grandmother ever found out, she'd do a hundred rosaries for me!!) However, my "true" religion, according to the nifty belief-o-matic, is Quaker, with 100% of my answers falling in line with their belief system. My first thought, "Oh no, I've gone over the line. Dave Matthews is a Quaker! I'm officially crazy obsessed!!" One of Dave's major themes in his songs is his spirituality. I wonder if his beliefs influenced my own, or if it is that I latched on to his music because I felt it rang true. I'm hoping it's the latter, and actually, I'm pretty sure it is. I mean, it's really not like me to let some rock star affect my personal relationship with GOD, even if it is Dave. I read the description of what Quakers believe, and really, I agreed with all of it, even though it sounds a bit wishy-washy in many ways. But you know what, I get pretty wishy-washy about these issues sometimes myself. I mean, how could I ever pretend that my small mind could ever know with absolute certainty the true meaning of creation and life?? So, not to say that answering these few questions on the internet has helped me find my spirituality, but it is interesting to find a religion that falls in place with my beliefs, when I find myself disagreeing with so many things that are said in the masses I go to. I'm not quite sure I'm going to be looking into joining the Quaker church, though.

ANOTHER DAY WITHOUT NANCIES?? Ok, I have been a good sport to this point. I've found other websites to fill the hole left in my day, but I can't go on much longer!!
Fuck being a woman. I feel like I'm going to keel over and die. Someone might as well be chopping me up with a knife from the inside out. I feel all dizzy and everything. Why am I supposed to go on with my daily life as if nothing is wrong when this feels way worse than any bronchitis or flu I've ever gotten? Ugh. I want to go home and lie in a dark room under the sheets and not leave until lunch. I don't know how I'm going to get through the day. Sitting here in this hell for the next eight and a half hours, and then off for my first public performance of this show (yes, in a bathing suit and in spandex shorts) God, someone just shoot me. I'm so miserable.

I've been reading Snopes.com all day! Interesting facts on all these urban legends! More than disproving urban legends, I was most impressed with what facts proved to be TRUE (and also what ridiculous things are passed around!)
--Did you know that Charlie Chaplin lost a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest?
--Did you know that the woman who Jack Nicholson thought was his sister his whole life turned out to be his mother?
--Did you know that Harrison Ford's bad case of diarrhea inspired a scene left in the movie Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark?
--What many thought to be the ghost of a boy who died in the apartment where Three Men and a Baby is actually a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson. (I remember when I believed the ghost story when the movie came out!! My cousins and I looked for it and we screamed when we saw it!!)
--What many thought was a munchkin committing suicide in the background of Wizard of Oz was actually an emu roaming the set! (I never believed that one...though I'm not quite sure how an emu resembles a hanged midget.)
--Apparently, some people say Einstein was a guest star on Gunsmoke!! (That made me laugh!)
--Apparently, people also believe that Charles Manson auditioned for the Monkees! (This made me laugh harder!)
--It is very likely that Alanis Morrisette's song You Oughta Know was inspired by Dave Coulier...that's Uncle Joey!!
--I feel justified in feeling skeptical about MGM's Great Movie Ride claim that they had the real plane used in the movie Casablanca. More interesting, however, is what they actually DID do for that scene with the plane!
--That phallus in Disney's Little Mermaid castle was supposedly not intentional, but I still don't buy it after reading the explanation. I mean, come, LOOK at it!!
--The other Little Mermaid one is the priest with the hard on. I was pretty sure it was unintentional when I saw it, but it sure is damn funny, especially when you watch it in the movie.
--Then there's the other Lion King one about a cloud of dust spelling sex. I don't know what I think of it, and it's inconclusive. I guess it might say that, but the story about the boy reading it, I don't think so!
--Also, no one was murdered during the recording of the original Love Rollercoaster. (Anika, I specifically remember you trying to convince me this was true!!)
There are tons of others that would take days to read. I've been quite entertained!

Still no Nancies.org this morning. I'm in for another loooooong day.
I'm exhausted too. Now that dress rehearsals have kicked in, I'm going non-stop from 6:30am when I get up to 11:00pm when I finally get back home. It's awful. I always hate this last week, because I never know how I will survive. I feel like a zombie. I couldn't even bear the thought of putting in my contacts this morning.
But the show is going well, I suppose. This is not my best performance, that's for sure, but the show will be entertaining enough. At least I hope. We are having our first audience on Thursday, and our official opening is Friday. I can't wait, mostly because this time leading up to it is killing me!!

My PMSing self is craving pizza or a cheeseburger for lunch. However, being that I have to wear spandex shorts every day for the next few weeks in front of hundreds of people, I'm thinking I should restrain myself. But dammit, I'm hungry and I want food. Am I going to have to do Subway instead? There is nothing I want more right now than a big, gooey pizza. Or a big gooey cheeseburger. Mmm...
Ugh! What to do!
Update:

Ok, since I don't have my Dave freaks to keep me entertained today, I have a feeling I will be posting quite a bit to this blog.
News of the Weird!
Some highlights:
New York City high school chemistry teacher Elihu McMahon, 69, reports daily to a do-nothing job, at $77,000 a year, as the result of being ordered out of the classroom based on various complaints and administrative findings. In fact, according to a February New York Post story, he has spent about three-fourths of his time in the last 15 years in such jobs (since New York teachers have generous job protections), costing the schools an estimated $600,000 in salary. Among the complaints against him: racist remarks to students (McMahon is black), insubordination, incompetent teaching, improper grading and sexual harassment (although McMahon blames the problems on bad administrators). [New York Post, 2-4-04]
An 18-year-old man was transferred to Youth Court, with its more lenient procedures, after he was arrested and charged with stabbing a man to death at a New Year's Eve party in Edmonton, Alberta. He will not be tried as an adult because the victim was stabbed just before midnight, and the alleged killer did not actually turn 18 until Jan. 1. [Edmonton Journal, 1-10-04]
Tom Musser, 81, and brother Jack, 84, are ex-cowboys who for the last 12 years have made and sold their own one-of-a-kind, crooked furniture through independent dealers from their home base in Delta, Colo. Their awkward-looking pieces are best sellers (1,600 sales so far) even though each one is almost unavoidably primitive, owing to the fact that the proud Mussers aren't (in the words of a satisfied customer) "burdened with any knowledge of woodworking." Said Tom, "We just do what the sticks (the wood) want." [Denver Post, 1-4-04]
Case Western Reserve University researchers revealed in a December journal article that cockroaches do not age gracefully, that after about 60 weeks of adulthood, they get stiff joints (which inhibits climbing) and hardened foot pads (which prevents sticking to vertical surfaces). One of the researchers, noticing that aged roaches seem to have lost their ability to escape from predators, hypothesized that the loss was brain-based; he tested the hypothesis by removing the roach's head (and, thus, brain), and sure enough, the roach once again was able to flee like a youngster. [Case Western Reserve University News, reporting on a Journal of Experimental Biology article, 1-15-04]
Among recent U.S. patents (according to a January story in the East Bay Express, Emeryville, Calif.): (1) a penile prosthesis with a magnet, from Deborah Knoll-Ewers, Hercules, Calif. (to overcome erectile dysfunction with new-age magnet therapy); (2) a plastic liner for men to use beneath their underwear, from Wesley Johnson, Burbank, Calif. (to keep the clothing clean while engaged in fully dressed sex, such as lap dances); and (3) an electrically safe device that attaches to the tongue, to make it vibrate, from Eric A. Klein, Mountain View, Calif. (to enhance a partner's sexual pleasure). [East Bay Express, 1-14-04] [Patent No. 6,482,147] [Patent No. 6,406,462] [Patent No. 6,572,569]

So sad!! This is what I find on Nancies this morning:
DATABASE DOWN TEMPORARILY STOP DISCUSSION BOARDS NEWS AND OTHER DATABASE THINGS DON'T WORK RIGHT NOW STOP WORKING ON FIXING PROBLEM STOP REDUCED TO USING TELEGRAPH TO UPDATE WEBSITE STOP RECOMMEND SPENDING TIME WITH FRIENDS, FAMILY, WORKING IN THE MEANTIME STOP
Then, if you try to log on to the boards directly, it says:
The nancies.org boards are currently down for emergency maintenence. (Read as: Waldo broke the database.)
While you're waiting, you can download and print out this Incredible Discussion Boards Simulator™. Just print out, fill in with pencil or pen, and stick to a cork bulletin board in a public place. Just check back a few hours later and, voila -- your very own nancies.org discussion board!
What am I going to do?? I actually did a bunch of work yesterday for some unknown reason. I have nothing left to do today. *sigh*
Anyway, last night we did the first full run-through of the show with costumes. Of course, opening weekend is falling right smack at "that time," so I am retaining water like crazy. I have to wear a bathing suit, spandex shorts, and midriff-baring shirts. I'm not normally one to feel self-conscious about my body, but when I am in certain conditions, I avoid certain things. I dress appropriately according to various factors. Unfortunately, can't quite do that now. Well, I guess I'll look good by next week's run. Ugh. No one should be forced to wear spandex shorts when bloated!!
Bobby and this girl he's been seeing seem to be moving closer and closer to becoming boyfriend and girlfriend! It sounds as if they're getting to the point where he doesn't have to keep asking her on dates. Rather, they figure out what they are doing each weekend. Sounds like he's got a girlfriend to me! My mom actually met her and said she is really sweet. Mom's seal of approval to the girl going after the ultimate mama's boy!

Prof: I need your help with the computer.
Me: Ok
*Walk to Prof's office*
Prof: How do I get to the floridatheatrical.org website?
Me: Umm, what do you mean?
Prof: I don't know. I'm supposed to go to floridatheatrical.org
Me: It didn't work when you typed it in?
Prof: Type in?
Me: When you typed in floridatheatrical.org, it didn't work?
Prof: Where do you type that in?
*small moment of dumbfoundedness*
Me: In this space up here where the address goes.
Prof: But it's on the College homepage right now.
*another small moment of dumbfoundedness*
Me: Yes, that's why you have to type in floridatheatrical.org there.
Prof: Can you show me how?
*a final moment of dumbfoundedness, followed by typing in floridatheatrical.org*
Prof: Perfect! Thanks!!

Oh, and I got rear-ended on Saturday. Obviously, I'm fine, since I only just remembered now. All that happened was that one of the lights that lights up the license plate got smashed. As far as I can tell, everything else looks fine. The guy gave me his number, but who knows if it's even real. Maybe I should have pressed a bit more for his license number, etc. The funny thing is that we saw him at the game afterward!

Ooh! I found out that the movie I just got cast in has actors from out of state who are coming here just for the movie. Wow! I didn't know it was that big a deal that I was competing against people from all over the country! I suddenly feel way cool!! Go me!!

So yeah, I actually did go to Old Navy. I bought two pairs of shorts and one tank top. I'm returning one of the shorts, though, because I thought they were the same cut as the other ones I bought, but they turned out to fit me all funky. I'm exchanging the tank top because I noticed a big streak across the back of it when I got home. Oh well, I still ended up buying something, which is more than I've done in probably close to a year. The shorts I bought and am keeping are awesome and I wore them all weekend!
As if that wasn't enough, I went to Victoria's Secret yesterday and spent over $100! Weird! I think that will be the end of my little shopping spree for a while.
On Saturday, we were down in Orlando with Andrew's best friend and his girlfriend for the Yankees game I had gotten him tickets to for Valentine's Day. (Pictures here!) We had a great time. The weather was flawless. Mid-70's, low humidity, clear skies. Perfect. We were sitting out in the field, just laying on the grass watching the game off and on. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the entire team doesn't go to all the Spring Training games. Since this was technically an away game for the Yanks, there was no Jeter and no A-Rod. Oh well. Andrew was still excited about seeing Sheffield, and Matsui was right in front of us for the first inning.
Yesterday I had tech rehearsal from noon to 5pm. Exhausting. I think I finally have my wardrobe settled. I have so many friggin' costume changes! I've been spoiled by so few lately, I guess. I wear six different costumes in two acts! Some of them are such quick changes that I have to wear a costume under another one. I think this playwright forgot that he wasn't writing a movie when he wrote all those changes in! Tonight we start running at show conditions, so hopefully it will all go smoothly. Opening night is Friday already! Wow.

It's a beautiful day outside! I want to run through a field and sing and dance. I want to take a nap under a tree. Glorious day.
Andrew will be getting back into town shortly after I get home from work today. From there, we are going straight to Orlando. Tomorrow is the Spring Training game I had gotten Andrew tickets to for Valentine's day. It's the perfect weather to sit outside and watch baseball. Wonderful!
I'm in a good mood today. No one around at work, playing Snood all day, sun shining, breeze blowing, and just a few hours away from the weekend.

Everything is so much nicer during Spring Break. I wish it was always Spring Break.
I miss Andrew, though. On top of missing him for a bunch of mushy reasons, everything is a lot harder when he's gone, especially with my rehearsals. I am responsible for every single walk Lucky gets, making sure he takes his medicine, applying some pads on his feet, taking out the trash, doing the dishes, etc., etc. I have to get up earlier and don't have a free moment until close to 11pm.
A week from Monday will be the first time in months and months that I will get home from work, and be able to just sit and relax for the rest of the night. Sounds wonderful. I can't wait until Monday. Wow, I can't believe opening night is a week from tomorrow!!

Since it's Spring Break and there's hardly anyone around, I decided to download a game. I ran across a good one I had never heard of before. Snood. Awesome!! I'm addicted! Too bad tomorrow is my last day to play it!

Andrew called to let me know he arrived safely in Buffalo. I wish I could have gone with him. If my show didn't open next week, I would have gone for sure. It would be too bad for the cast to have people missing at this stage. I almost feel guilty about it. It was so nice to have him with me for Ito's funeral. I wish I could give him a hug.

So, what am I going to do with myself? If I'm ever going to make a move, I need to make it in the next couple months, because otherwise, I'll have less than two years left here, and no one is going to want to hire me for that length of time.
So what options do I have?
1) Look for a new job
I have been trying this for over a year now. I search the employment postings in the paper every week. I look at other positions within UF every week. I check out Santa Fe. I browse the websites of every major employer here in town to see what they have. I've been at this for over a year. Maybe something will come along that will work out.
2) Look to grow in my current job
I tried getting creative and asking for a promotion here quite a while back. There is no real promotion for my position. I did develop a detailed proposal of what my promotion would entail, how it would save the department money, why I was qualified to do it, etc., etc. They decided it was more economical to just make me do the work without additional pay or added title or respect. With the new building, the budget has only gotten tighter, and my boss told us staff people that if we weren't all on contract, he would be cutting. I'm pretty confident I'm not going anywhere here.
3) Find things to add to my life that will counteract my negative feelings in this job.
I figured filling the rest of my life with theatre would make my general attitude get better, making coming into work more tolerable. However, what is has done is left me feeling tired all the time and has taken away the time I would spend on Andrew and my household responsibilities. My house is a mess. My weekends become crammed. I hardly see Andrew. I love theatre, but it puts a strain on the rest of my life. I sacrifice one end for another. Though I will never leave it, I know the answer to fulfilling the vast hole my job leaves me with is not to overcompensate.
4) Strike out on my own
While the idea of not having to rely on all these stupid people holding me back is very exciting for me, the truth is that there is so much risk involved. I don't know if I'm able to handle that risk. If whatever I do bombs, Andrew's salary is no where near enough to support the two of us. We have a mortgage, we have money that we are saving up to have a family. If I try something out, and it goes wrong, we have a lot to lose. Plus, I have no expertise (or even general business sense) to feel very confident to run a business efficiently and smoothly. Anything I would do, would have to be done very cautiously. I probably would not be able to quit my job until it gets off the ground. Therefore, this does not solve my problem.
5) Suck it up
This has been my plan so far. Sometimes I think to myself that this job isn't so bad. I sit here and get to play on the internet all day and get paid for it. It's got very nice benefits, and I'm probably overpaid for what I do. However, that feeling doesn't last long. I feel degraded being here. I receive little to no respect. I am intelligent and capable, but I do nothing more than send out a few faxes and sort mail. I feel like a waste here. My parents wasted over $100K on my education for me to do a job someone with a GED could do. Andrew comes home with stories of how he is making a difference in people's lives, and all I can do is be happy for him, because I have nothing else to contribute. I sit here and feel my brain rot. On top of that, my attitude toward this job has gotten so bad, that I'm actually sucking at this job that is beneath me. I am rude to everyone. I let my desk get horribly messy. I'll put tasks aside if it interferes with my internet browsing. I send student workers to do half the things I used to do. However, my other options aren't working out, so I have no other choice than to stick by this, "Suck it up." Is that anyway to go through life, though?

It's chilly today, but nice and sunny. I like this time of year.
Our concrete people never showed up yesterday. I don't get it. If they don't show up today to do this, they are going to have to wait until next Wednesday. Andrew can't be home forever! This is his Spring Break, so it was perfect.

Woohoo! I just had someone send me a super underground DVD recording of the Rochester show I went to. Apparently, I'm one of only a dozen people or so that have this. I rock. I'm going to burn it and send it back from whence it came. I love my connections! I can't wait to watch it tonight!

Andrew's great aunt died on Friday night/Saturday morning. She was like a grandmother for him since she never had kids or grandkids of her own. She was 95, so it's not like it comes as a huge shock, but he's still bummed out about it, obviously. He's leaving Wednesday for the funeral and coming back on Friday. I'd go with him, but I'm already starting in to the dress rehearsals. Sucks. I hate seeing him down. I wish I could do something to make him feel happy, but I know he has to feel these things for now, and I know he'll feel better soon.
Besides the bad news, it was a good weekend. Josh and Allison had a great time here. The weather was so perfect! We went to check out the gators sunning in the various lakes around and enjoyed the outdoors, especially since they're heading back to 40 degree weather now! After they left on Sunday afternoon, Andrew's friend Dan called and we went out to the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. It was really nice. We'll have to take Andrew's parents there when they visit next time. Also, we discovered a really neat bird store. We bought seed there as well as a little bird bath. Our backyard is going to be all about birds! Our backyard is going to get noticeably nicer today, because we are finally having the concrete people come to pave it. We're going to have a real patio, rather than a patch of dirt with wood beams designating the borders. I'm very happy about that! Once that is set, we'll replant a little garden and have a great little thing going back there. I hope.
Today is my grandmother's birthday, my sister-in-law's birthday, and my cousin's birthday! I owe a lot of phone calls tonight!

Lately, I've been seeing this car in the parking lot with a bumper sticker that reads:
I B 4 Jesus
Who R U 4?
I wonder how bothered the makers of this piece of genius were by not being able to find something to substitute "who." They were obviously willing to sacrifice basic grammatic principles in the name of glorifying our savior with a catchy sticker (as exemplified by the use of the letter B). I wonder how much they labored in trying to find someway around the word before settling on this.

A bit of good news: After having bought our place only one and a half years ago, comparable units in our neighborhood are selling for $30K more than we paid for ours. Nice. If only this rate could keep up for the next two and a half years, we'd be able to sell the place for $50K more!! I don't think that will necessarily be the case, but nonetheless, we have obviously made a good investment!

I can't believe that this Sunday is the last day I'll have off in the next five weeks. How insane is that? How crazy is it that I actually had to take one and a half hours off of work yesterday to get any house work done?? I hate that I can't wait for this show to be over because it's the best part of my day. However, having that chunk of time taken out every day just creates too much stress in the rest of my life. Arg!
The one and only Josh Bennett will be arriving to Gainesville today with his fiancee Allison. For those who came to my wedding, you'll remember Josh as the tall, lanky groomsman who got trashed and stole the MC's mic to sing a stirring rendition of "Soul Man." It will be an interesting weekend for sure!

Apparently, I am a grammar Nazi. Despite my rampant typos around here, I actually do know how to speak good...
What is Your Grammar Aptitude?

You are the grammar Fuhrer. All bow to your
authority. You will crush all the inferior
people under the soles of your jackboots, and
any who question your motives will be
eliminated. Your punishment is being the bane
of every other person's existence, because
you're constantly contradicting stupidity.
Everyone will be gunning for you. Your dreams
of a master race of spellers and grammarians
frighten the masses. You must always watch your
back. If only your power could be used for good
instead of evil.

Since the new year, we have spent a little over $600 on Lucky. I'm not quite sure how we ended up with a sickly mutt, but he should be very glad to be so lovable.
Since Andrew gets paid through grants, he doesn't get any taxes deducted from his paycheck. We owe Dubya $1500, apparently.
Last night when I got back from rehearsal, my car's electrical system decided to go crazy on me. My windows wouldn't roll up and upon taking my keys out of the ignition, my radio and dome lights came on and wouldn't go off. It's in the shop now. Can't wait to get the bill for that one.
I don't know, everything is just getting to be too much for me. I came home yesterday after work and threw a temper tantrum over everything. The job, the money, the time constraints. Ugh. I just feel overwhelmed. I wish I didn't have to save up my vacation days, because I could certainly use a vacation right now, even if it's just sitting at home for a few days. Somehow during my tantrum, however, I managed to cook some delicious chicken satay. Don't know how I managed to pull that off.
I'm leaving today at 3:00. Partly because one of Andrew's friends is coming into town tomorrow with his fiancee to spend the weekend, and the house is a disaster area. Also, the thought of spending another full nine hour day in this chair is enough to send me over the edge. I'll have consider that two hours of house cleaning my mini-vacation.

I hate that I feel like I'm sitting here waiting for something to happen. I hate this job, but I'm even getting sick of hearing myself whining about it all of the time. What am I supposed to do instead, though?? I've been applying for dozens and dozens of jobs for well over a year now, and nothing is working out. I had the glimmer of hope yesterday that I could go out there and make things happen for myself instead. However, I don't think that is feasible. So where does that leave me? Stuck here? Is there really nothing to be done to change this? I mean, am I really powerless? I don't know what I can do to get out of here. I think the worst part about this job is the feeling that I can't escape it.

Well, no one seems to think that my gift shop idea is realistic. Great. I guess I'm at the mercy of others once again to take pity on me and give me a job that I don't hate. I have no idea what I'm going to do with myself.
As for the movie, the producer is a professor here at UF who has received a grant from PBS to make this TV movie. My role in it is pretty small, but it still sounds like it's going to be lots of fun. I don't know all that much about it, but we are meeting on the 15th to discuss the details. I'll report back then.

This may be me just having wild daydreams as usual, but I've just gotten seriously thinking about starting a new business. I was sitting here feeling all frustrated that I have not been able to find any job despite searching for what has felt like an eternity. Maybe what I have to do is make my own job. My dad has been suggesting for me to do this for a while, but I never liked any of his ideas. (One was for me to start a fitness center!!) However, just this morning, I thought what would be a realistic ideal for me right now? I had an image of me running a little gift shop in downtown. Back in Davidson and the surrounding areas, there was no shortage of interesting little shops with unique gifts that I used to love to go to. They had character! I have yet to find a place like that here in Gainesville. I wonder how it would do here!
I realize that starting and running a business is a lot of hard work, but who knows. It's worth considering and researching. There are some organizations here that offer classes that give advice on how to do it. The worst that can happen is I lose $25!
Who knows if this will work or not. I think I'll bring it up to Andrew and to my parents tonight.
What would I name it?

A day to sit out in the field with a smoothie in hand watching my dog romp around. A day to lay on the couch watching mindless TV. A day at the beach. Something. Just a day with no responsibility. Just one. I'm seriously considering calling in sick sometime this week.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT ANCHORAGE (http://www.anchorage.net).
We are Alaska’s largest city, with a population of 280,000. Anchorage sits
on the shores of Cook Inlet, at the foot of the snow-covered Chugach
Mountains. On clear days, one can see the Alaska, Talkeetna and Denali
ranges, as well as Mt. McKinley itself, the continent’s highest peak at
20,320 feet, several hours drive away.
The Portage Glacier is less than an hour’s drive from downtown, and the
Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay are all within
easy driving distance. Aside from the spectacular scenery, there are lots of
hiking trails, great salmon fishing and opportunities to see whales, sea
otters, puffins, moose (Anchorage backyard fixtures), and other wildlife.
Long summer daylight hours will allow you to get into the nearby Chugach
mountains after work or on weekends. (No classes are scheduled on
weekends, but performances do take place on the final two weekends of
Conservatory.) For a fairly comprehensive list of Alaska links on the
Internet, go to:

I just remembered the dream I had last night. It involved Smurfs. It turns out there is some strange game Andrew was playing that had been around for decades where you can create a profile of a new Smurf and people vote on it to make it officially a new Smurf. I was very surprised to learn of a professor who had his dream Smurf on a waiting list for over 30 years while Andrew's vision of a bitchier Smurfette passed muster within five minutes. I had dinner with this professor to hear of his woes of his unwanted Smurf. Wow. What was I on??

So I stayed up last night past midnight to watch the Oscars. If I thought LOTR was a decent movie before, I hate it now!! There is no way it deserved to win every single category it was nominated for. It definitely deserved the awards for art direction and costumes. I could would definitely accept reasoning for awarding it with best director and best picture. However, winning every single other thing as well? No, I don't see it. It was up against so many other amazing movies. I should have won maybe half of the other nominations. I agree that LOTR was an extraordinary cinematic achievement of historic proportions, but it was by no means a perfect movie. The biggest outrage of all: Best Editing. WHAT?? A movie that has me thinking it's about to end for the last 45 minutes does not seem to be edited too well in my opinion. It was at that point that my rebellion against LOTR went in to full blast. I officially hate the movie for sweeping the Oscars. There were so many deserving movies that walked away empty-handed.
I was really pulling for Bill Murray to win Best Actor, but I expected Sean Penn to win. I pretty much knew all the other acting awards. Although I would have loved to see Sofia Copolla win Best Director, I'm glad she won for screenplay, because she definitely deserved to be recognized for her work on the amazing Lost in Translation. I think that may be one of my favorite movies ever.
I also decided that I need to be invited to the Oscars at some point in my life. I want to get pretty and walk the red carpet and have everyone pour over how perfect I look. I'd be the best dressed there for sure! ;)
