Random Musings...

Finally got called about the interview for the job at the Center for Performing Arts! WOOHOO!! I'll go in tomorrow at 10am. Fortunately, I've been acting so sick all day that they will not think anything of me missing tomorrow morning. I was considering leaving early today instead, but I guess I'll hold off now...although I would love the rest.
Wish me luck!

Splendid. Let's hope Frances doesn't follow the projected path just like Charley didn't. When I went to bed last night, they said it could hit anywhere from Cuba to North Carolina. Now it seems a little more zeroed in on us. Once again, the middle of the path, the most likely track, goes right around Gainesville. Andrew and I have been debating our Labor Day weekend plans. We're either going to go down to Orlando to spend it with Bobby (my parents will be out) or he'll come up here and spend it with us in Gainesville. I've been hoping he could come up since we have tickets to the Gator game this Saturday. However, I'm guessing that we're going to have to plan around this storm now. I'm not sure which house is safer in a hurricane. Obviously, my parents' house did fine with Charley, but it is full of glass all over the place. Very lucky. Mine, I'm sure is not near the quality of construction of my parents' house, but it's a townhouse protected by other units on either side. I'd say it depends on the projected path, but you know what happened to all those Tampa evacuees that ended up at my Dad's hotel!! Stupid hurricane. What's with this year?? I've gone my entire life without ever having to worry about one, and now it seems like we're getting one blow after the next. My dad laughs, though, because once again, in his nearly half a century living in the tropics, he will have never experienced a hurricane. He'll be in Texas this weekend visiting friends. If it looks certain to hit us, though, I'm sure they won't go. I can't imagine they'll leave the three of us to fend for ourselves and take care of the house! I'll have to call them tonight and see what their plans are. This is shaping up to be a great Labor Day Weekend, huh? My last day off of work until Thanksgiving will be spent cleaning up crap with no AC.

I am so pissed off I could quit today. Just got this email sent to the entire department:
All:
Please take a look at Stan's recommendations. I would like to discuss this at today's meeting under new business. As we move into the new building let us remind ourselves that this is not business as usual and we need to raise the bar on all of our service and outreach activities. We have a wonderful opportunity to reinvent the way the world perceives us.

Subject: Reception Script
KM,
As we discussed.
Here is a sample script for what I have experienced as "professional
reception language" when answering an office reception station.
"Good morning (afternoon), School of Theater and Dance, this is Rosalie
(name of receptionist) how may I direct
your call ? "
When caller asks for Professor X....ask...."Who may I say is calling ?"
Then say "One moment please while I check that extension."
Contact the callers extension and say, (if the person answers) Ms. X is on
line 1, (Profesor may respond in any of the following ways: If the
professor is not in, return to caller and say "Profesor X is not avaliable,
would you like their voice-mail"
1. Thank you I'll take the call
2. Please send them to voice mail
3. Please ask them what this is referring to, and let the profesor know.
The above is a screeing process that alllows Faculty to determine how they
wish to handle the call, for example, if they are with a student they might
wish to have the call sent to voice mail, or if thery are expecting an
important call, they may wish to take the call etc....
Since we have direct lines, the faculty member can be judicious as to whom
they offer direct lines to, and who they give the main number to.
I hope this will raise the level of professionalism in our communication
with those who contact us via phone.
Thanks.
Stan
This completely pisses me off that I have these people writing my script for me. If they don't think I'm professional and would like for me to be more professional, I wonder if I could ask them to address the gross lack of respect I receive here sometimes. Of course, they would think I'm overstepping my bounds, right? After all, faculty have better things to worry about than whether or not it's professional to yell at me for things that are beyond my control.

I LOVED finding Anika's pics from the Alpine trip in my inbox when I got in today! Made me laugh so hard I cried. Exactly what I needed!
The trip was great. I'm so glad I decided to go. It was great to really get to meet all of Andrew's good friends from high school. They are such a fun group. They reminded me a lot of my own friends, which made me really happy. Not only did it make them more fun to hang out with, but it's nice to know that Andrew has always been who he is today and we are very compatible. We also found a lot to be grateful for for more unfortunate circumstances. One of Andrew's best friends (who was a groomsman at our wedding) is currently beginning the process of divorce from his wife who everyone warned him against. Two and a half years later, he has finally realized it will never work. We're glad that he is moving on, but it is such a difficult situation. I can't get into it all, but yeah, not good. Then, the couple who just got married on Saturday (the groom was another one of Andrew's groomsmen!) spent the entire time we were there fighting. It made all of us a bit worried, really. They weren't just bickering fights, either. They were like "Should we really go through with this or not?" kind of fights? They did go through with it. The wedding was GORGEOUS and so much fun. The day after, however, we all went out to brunch and the bride and groom didn't even sit next to each other. Actually, I'm not sure I even saw them talk to each other. Really strange. They seemed wonderful when we saw them just in June and met her for the first time. We're hoping it's just the stress of the wedding that got to them. Still, Andrew and I, looking at all this, couldn't help but feel thankful for what we have. There we were, over three years after our wedding, more madly in love than ever. Every single one of his friends told us that we're one of the best couples they've ever seen. Made me feel all tingly inside. I've always known what I have with Andrew is amazing, but it opened my eyes to see other wonderful people deal with things I can't even dream of. I wonder how much is luck, how much of it is making the right choice, and how much of it is the work we put into our relationship.
Yesterday afternoon, just in time for all the flights and drive back here, I start getting very ill. Like shivering fever kind of ill. I still feel like complete crap right now. I think I'm beginning to get a fever again after taking some aspirin when I woke up. I decided to come into work anyway, with the hopes that I would come in, show that I wanted to make sure things were set after me being gone for two days, and then head home when I was done. However, I was informed that I have to take minutes at today's afternoon faculty meeting and the other two office bitches are going to be out after 3pm. So yeah, I've ended up stuck here for 9 hours when I intended on being here maybe 4 or 5. Sucks. I think I'll keep referring back to the Alpine pictures to keep me smiling, because nothing else is going to until I get home!
EDIT: I realize that the part I wrote about relationships may have sounded snotty and judgemental toward the newlyweds. I was primarily thinking about the failed marriage of Andrew's other friend. We are hoping that it was just nerves that put the bride and groom at odds with each other, because like I said, we had a great impression of them the other time we met her and saw them together. Plus, different couples worked different ways. Andrew and I talked about all that. It just planted a little seed for thought for us and got us to talking about us. Just wanted to clarify I wasn't actually passing judgement on anyone!

I know I say this a lot, but I really feel like this is the longest day ever. It has felt like we're on the brink of 5:00 since lunch time. Ugh. This will not end. I can't wait to get the hell out of town and leave this office behind to fend for itself for a few days. Bitch Prof is on the prowl too. Lord help me if she decides to ask me for something.
I'm going to be wearing a super cute dress for the wedding, by the way. I got it for my birthday and haven't worn it yet. It's strapless, short, yet kind of retro in an Audrey Hepburn kinda way. Black and white pleats. Really cute. If I look good, I'll post pics! ;)

What a day.
I was so close to not coming in. I woke up feeling very under the weather from what I assume was bad food from one of my favorite restaurants, Chopstix. Ick. I was shooting Pepto Bismol straight from the bottle. Then, I took out from the dryer the sleeping bag Kim lent me to go to Alpine and found that part of it had actually melted!!! NOO!! I was so upset!! So now, I'm going to replace it for her, but damn if those things aren't expensive! She had a nice one. Oh well.
So then, I come in and get yelled at because we ran out of paper once again (once again, it's all at the new building because WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THERE ALREADY!!). I'm told that I need to retrieve paper immediately by any means possible. I then get yelled at for entering the building and leaving the office. Can't friggin' win. This stupid building was only partially opened in the last two hours so that classes can meet on the first floor. All other floors, including the office, continue to be off limits. I've heard varying accounts from "maybe tomorrow morning" to "I'm thinking weeks." And these are the circumstances. Why is it any wonder that I can keep inventory here? We're supposed to be running as meagerly as possible over here so that we have very little to move into the new building when we move out. We no longer have real movers, so all heavy stuff had to be over already.
Then, I'm dealing with all these lost students who are even more confused than usual, and for once, I can't blame them. I'm confused myself.
Today has been extremely stressful, to say the least. Fortunately, we're doing Happy Hour after work today. Tomorrow, we leave for Orlando after work to catch a flight to Buffalo on Thursday for Jeff's wedding. I'm definitely treating this as a vacation, especially since it's my last trip of the summer. I certainly have done a lot this summer, which almost makes the rest of the year seem unbearable. Hopefully this new job will come through for me and make it all better. I feel like if I could just solve my job problem, I would have hardly any complaints in my life.

Woohoo! An update from the director of the PBS film I shot back in the spring:
Hello, everyone. Hope you had a great summer.
You’ll be happy to know that “A Second Chance” has been edited, and it looks great. Thanks to all of you for making this project possible. The film is about 75 minutes long, which is essentially a short feature.
I had a meeting this past Saturday with the composer, Roger Hunt, who’ll be doing the music, so that’s underway.
My next step now is to “sweeten” the sound: make sure the volumes and pitches are consistent, get rid of unwanted background sounds and hums, add sound effects like doorbells and telephones ringing, and so forth.
As you can probably guess, the project is at this stage ahead of schedule. I’m looking for a premiere in early to mid December. I’ll let all of you know about the place and time.
Please get back to me with any questions/comments you may have. All in all, I think we’ll have a film that we can all be proud of.
Take care.

Yesterday, Andrew and I decided to go to the mall because he wanted to buy some new ties and shirts for work. As we were walking across from one side to another, we ran into this local artists exhibition. There were about a dozen artists with booths set up to display and sell their art. I love this kind of thing, so we took some time out to browse through each artist's booth. Some of them were downright terrible, but some were quite good. And actually, we found one booth that both Andrew and I completely fell in love with! A local photographer, John Moran, had the most stunning images of the Gainesville/North Central Florida area either of us had ever seen. It was truly spectacular. Andrew and I were both equally mesmerized. We were in his little booth for about half an hour. We loved nearly everything we saw. We took his card with the sincere intention of contacting him to buy some of his pieces later. While we were shopping, though, we couldn't stop thinking about them. Finally, we decided that we had to buy them right then. We turned around and came back and bought a whopping four pieces!! These weren't cheap, and Andrew and I have NEVER spent that kind of our own money on ourselves, but we just loved Moran's work so much and we felt that it is the perfect memento of our time here in Gainesville that we will look back on forever as the place where we started our new lives together. Our reactions to some of these pieces were so visceral, we couldn't help it. And actually, to narrow it to four pieces was difficult enough.
So, we walked away with:
Sunrise Sentinel
Flight of the Cranes
Alligators at Dusk
With this one, you can't really tell what you're looking at on the screen. In the actual larger picture we bought, you can see that all of those little orange specs you see are actually eyes of alligators. There are so many of them in this shot, it's incredible! This is on Lake Newnan, which is right here in town.
Then there is one that is not online that was my favorite of them all. It is a foggy morning on UF campus that is right along the drive I usually take to work. I've posted about how much I love this image before. It's right along the lake, this giant oak tree is perfectly reflected into the misty waters with an egret wading along the shore. The whole foggy quality of it makes it feel so peaceful and muted. It was by far my favorite piece, and I so wish it was online so I could show it off!
For buying so many pieces, he gave us this as a freebie, which is so cute!:
Swamp Dragons
The many runners up:
Comet Hale-Bopp
In the Beginning
In the Graveyard of the Giants
Lunar Eclipse Over Century Tower
Venus Kisses the Moon
To view a larger slice of his collection I HIGHLY recommend viewing it all because it is all so very, very beautiful. He perfectly captures the beauty of North Florida. If I had the space, I might have posted nearly all of them up on here!! AMAZING stuff. It was so hard to decide which ones to buy. If it weren't for limited funds and limited wallspace, we might have bought half his collection. We feel that strongly about it.

Longest day ever. These last 20 minutes can not go by fast enough. I can sense something is about to be dumped on me just before I leave. I have a gut feeling about it. This day has been crazy enough. Too crazy. I'm having a margarita tonight, that's all there is to it.

Ugh. Today is the nightmare I was expecting it to be. Hopefully things will cool off in the afternoon once the faculty is all in the meeting. I just had to go over to the new building and bring back a whole carton of paper that had been moved since we ran out of paper here (because we thought we'd be moved by now!). It was so friggin heavy. I had it on a handcart, but the thing was so hard to move around. Then, I just photocopied and hole-punched 50 packets of 90 pages each. My hands are hurting and I have a headache from having to jump up and down to punch holes in all those damn things. I'm about to have another twenty five 90 page packets as soon as Bitch Prof is done revising them (which she was supposed to have done already) so I have a short break in the torture. My boss chewed me out today because I didn't have the archives of our syllabi because they had been packed and moved out to the new building already. (Once again, we were supposed to be there already) I had to go back over there and find it in a box somewhere. I can not wait until 5pm today! I can not wait!
The new building really is very beautiful. Too bad I hope not to be there very long. This move has been a real pain in the ass. My boss was getting after me for being behind on the packing. Everyone else only had to pack up their own offices, but I had to pack up my office, all of our archival and student files, and the supply room. Well, I get almost everything packed up and moved over, and then I'm yelled at for not having the things I need here on hand. Whatever. We were supposed to have moved on Monday. The movers came and took our boxes, but we are not allowed to be operating out of the building yet. Then the date was Wednesday, then today, now it's *maybe* Monday. I'm thinking more like Wednesday. Stupid. I can't wait to be there already. This has been such a headache.
My carpet continues to be drenched and HIGHLY smelly. This morning we could smell it when we woke up all the way in our bedroom, which is about as far as you can get from the area. I Febrezed the hell out of this morning, but I don't think it made a dent. I'm so afraid of having to replace the whole carpet. Ugh. Sucks.
Oh, and my toe still hurts. It feels like it has all this pressure like it's ready to explode. Fun.
BUT...it's FRIDAY!!!!!!!

Had meeting for most of the day today. When I got back, Blogger was down. Then, I got totally SLAMMED with work. Ouch. I'm going to be running around tomorrow morning too. This weekend can't come soon enough. And...I'll actually be in Gainesville! It's been a while.
Unfortauntely, we're going to be doing some home repair while we're here. Lately we've been noticing that the carpet next to the sliding glass door has been wet. We've had some downpours lately and so much water came in that it actually made the carpet sloshy! NOT good. This has resulted in a very unpleasant smell in our place. I wanted to invite people over, but there is nothing more embarrassing than a smelly house, so no. We're hoping that just caulking in the frame of the door will do it. If not, we're either going to have to buy an all new door (which will not be cheap) or we might have a problem with water coming in from the foundation (which would be even worse!!). So, hopefully we're able to fix this problem ourselves.
I did something really stupid today. There was a soccer game going on the field by our neighborhood where we walk Lucky. I noticed that a ball had fallen into the pond but was floating back to the edge. I went over, got it out, and thought it would be nice to kick it back over to the people playing. Well, I did kick it to them. Hard enough to get it all the way to the field. The problem? I was wearing sandals. Umm. Yeah. I didn't think it'd be a big deal. Goes to show what I know. I held in my scream, struggled to maintain my composure so as to not embarrass myself in front of all the soccer players, turned to Andrew and said, "Wow. That was really stupid of me. That really, really, really hurt." He looked down and seemed a bit surprised. I looked down to find that my toe was coated in blood. OUCH!! No wonder it was hurting like hell. Actually, hours later, it still hurts. I had to come back home, wash it off and put an ice pack on it. It's been a long time since I've bled like that. I feel like such an idiot. Owwie.

My ears hurt. I hope I'm not getting sick.
I fell asleep watching the Olympics last night, which sucked. I missed the end of the gymnastics competitions, which I wanted to see so badly. I was also in and out during the exciting men's relay swimming competition. It's been hard for me to stay up past 10pm lately. I guess it's from getting no sleep at all last week.
Ok, it's taken me over an hour to write this so far. My ears so much now they're giving me a headache. Not good. Time for some Advil.

Umm...WOW!!!!
I have confirmation that I am a lunatic. I just did a Google image search for "Dave Matthews" and pictures of me come up within the first page. I've gone too far.
ps...I just started consoling myself seeing, oh no, it's only because I went to that Rochester show and met up with Shep...but then...I DID get on a plane to fly up to the freezing cold, leaving behind my husband to be with a bunch of people I had never met before, to see a musician perform who I have seen a dozen times. It's not so consoling to think of it that way.

I'm glad Florida is such a great place, because after surviving two hurricanes in as many days and looking over right now to see 94.5% humidity when there is no threat of rain any time soon, well, love for this place has to get me through. I just have to remind myself what the rest of the year is like. No storms, clear blue skies, cool breeze, bright sun. Perfection.
They just posted the job at the Center for Performing Arts that I had been waiting for. I wish the timing had worked out better because this is such a crunch time of year and I have been dealing with all this packing crap, but it'll still be worth it to get out of here, especially after the day I had yesterday. This other job isn't more exciting, but it does pay a couple dollars more an hour, has its own office with a door, I won't have anyone asking me to do stupid things because I have my own, self-contained job, I have a friend who works there, it has room for promotion AND I don't have to be there until 8:30, rather than 8:00. Woohoo! Sounds like heaven to me right now. What I actually do is almost inconsequential to me at this point. What I would do, however, is answer the phones, distribute the mail and crap like that that I do now, but my main responsibility is coordinating the volunteers and ushers for all performances and writing the center's newsletter. Definitely nothing that's over my head, but hey, all of those other plusses REALLY make it seem like the perfect opportunity for me right now that I've been waiting for. It's not a stretch for me to get it at all since I'm an internal candidate with a college degree in the area. So yeah, I'm really betting I won't be here by the end of September. I can't believe it actually might happen! The moment I've been waiting two and a half years for!!

All of these pictures were taken within a ten minute drive of my parents' house. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 It's nothing compared to the poor people in Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, but it was just a complete shock that it could happen like this so far inland. There are a ton more pictures if you scroll around in there.
And how's this for an Orlando skyline? WOW!
This one is kind of funny, though.
EDIT: Ok, these links keep changing. I can't keep updating them. Oh well. Point is, Charley sucked.

Today might be the end of me. I need to scream.
Ok, so backtrack to Thursday. I left for Orlando directly from work. I made a pitstop at home to bring in the patio furniture since the hurricane was predicted to head straight for us here in Gainesville, and I was off. The drive down was weird. I've never had so little traffic, and then, of course, it occured to me that no one in their right mind would be driving southbound on I-75 toward Tampa when it had just been ordered evacuated. I passed a handful of cars and several news trucks from as far away as Kentucky. It was only once I veered toward Orlando that I began to get traffic, presumably due to those fleeing Tampa.
We went to the airport Friday morning. We decided, just to be on the safe side, to bring my car in my parents' garage, rather than out on the driveway. Our flight left and I prayed for my little house in Gainesville and that it'd be ok for when I got back. We flew song, which has those nifty personal TVs that get all these regular channels via satellite. We were watching CNN when all of a sudden they said it took an unexpected turn east and was going to come in through SW Florida and head straight for Orlando! We freaked out as we watched it climb from Category 2 to 3 to 4! They were talking about how it was so strong Orlando would not be spared the hurricane force winds.
We arrived in Puerto Rico, but kept one eye on the news reports as we greeted family, etc. We watched the radar as the first band hit our house. We called our neighbors, and then said it was, "the worst we've ever seen!" (And they are old!) Things were still ok at that point, however. My dad called the hotel, and things were pretty crazy. After the hurricane passed, we could not get a hold of anyone in the neighborhood. We called the hotel, and they said that several rooms had been destroyed and they were currently going door to door to check on all the guests. The hotel was 100% full and, ironically, many of them were evacuees from Tampa!
The next morning, the reports from the hotel were fairly grim, but good considering the circumstances. Like they had said, a few rooms did not survive (the poor guests were huddled in the bathroom). Several of the cars in the parking lot were smashed up from flying debris. The lobby had a huge leak right over the front desk, which fried the computers. The general manager's house lost a part of its roof, and most of the employees could not make it since all bus service was discontinued. We finally got a hold of the neighbors, who informed us that our house was barely visible due to all the fallen trees everywhere and that it would take them a while to be able to get there to check if it was ok. My parents at this point had had enough. They decided to fly out that afternoon and miss Jackie's wedding. It was such a tough decision, but it had to be done. Bobby and I stayed behind to attend the wedding, and they went back to see what they could do. My dad had to work a makeshift front desk for all the people checking out, my mom had to go clean.
So Bobby and I stayed, and the wedding was more fun than I expected it to be. I was envisioning it being completely depressing since my wonderful Jackie was marrying an asshole, but I managed to ignore that for those few hours because she looked so beautiful and so happy. How can I be upset with that smile on her face? I can only hope she knows what she's doing and proves us all wrong. The party was a lot of fun. Great music, food was delicious, people were wasted...all the makings of the perfect wedding. I'm so glad I went after having dreaded it for so long. Plus, it was great to be in Puerto Rico again. I can't believe I hadn't been back since my grandfather's funeral. WAY too long considering I'd be there for one reason or another two or three times a year after we moved away, sometimes for two months at a time during summers. Damn is the food good too. Wow. I forgot just how good food can be. Somehow, it's not the same when you try to make the same recipes here. The ingredients aren't quite right, I suppose. But really, it was great to be eating that food, getting together with family, seeing the beautiful blue ocean at every turn, hearing the waves always in the background. It's so nice going back.
So yesterday was the adventure of getting back. Our flight, surprisingly, left on time and as we flew in, we began to get a birds eye view of the aftermath of the storm. It actually didn't look so bad from the air. It seemed like there were only patches of debris, and everything else was fine. That wasn't quite the case, because what I couldn't see is that all that debris had been merely collected there from having flown off all the buildings in the area. We taxied around the airport on the way to our gate and passed gate after gate in ruins! I couldn't believe the Orlando Airport was this damaged and I hadn't heard any mention of it on the news. No, it's nothing like what Punta Gorda looked like, but still, significant damage was there. The airport was running at about 50%. Workers were there boarding up the broken windows, gates were roped off with all of the ceiling panels collapsed onto the floor. Cardboard signs written in Sharpies directed you to the baggage claim. It was crazy! My parents were there to pick us up, and as we left the airport, we began to see a parade of fallen trees, some snapped away, some completely uprooted. It was such a bizarre sight. About 1/3 of the roadsigns had been blown away, no where to be seen. The other half were bent and strange angles that made it impossible to read. It's a good thing we live there and no the way, because not only would we not see any signs to 417, but once you were on 417, there was nothing there to let you know you were in the right place. You just kind of had to know what the exit sort of looked like. The majority of the businesses lost their signs completely. Many had damage like broken windows, missing pieces of roof, etc. We drove by some neighborhoods that looked fine besides the fallen trees, and some neighborhoods where each house had already put the blue tarp FEMA had provided them to cover up signifant roof damage. Those who didn't have the tarps, had most of their shingles blown off. We drove by patches that had power, and patches that didn't. All of a sudden, it'd be pitch black outside, but you knew that you were not in the middle of no where. Traffic lights weren't working, street lights weren't on, businesses were closed, houses dark.
We got to our exit and looked around for a place that might be open to eat since we had lost a lot of our food to the power outage. My jaw just about fell when we drove past a neighborhood along our same road that had a brick wall encircling it that had completely collapsed. We found a Chili's that was open and was packed. We sat at the bar and ordered off the limited 4 item menu. When we finally got to our neighborhood, I could not believe how horrible it looked. Then, I couldn't believe that every single house was fine. I don't understand our luck at all. Trees and branches were down everywhere. By the time we were there, most people had time to collect the major debris along the side of the road for a cleanup crew to collect. It was piled so tall you couldn't see the houses behind them. Several of the gorgeous, large trees completely fell, but not on the houses whose yards they were in. Incredible. Our driveway was full of the branches of the tree that sits at its end. The trunk remained, but nothing else. How they didn't damage the roof or any of the windows on their way down, I have no idea. My dad had help from some neighbor children to clear out the driveway of all of this mess.
Needless to say, I decided to stay the night there, rather than to try and drive out of there in the dark. There were still trees strewn about the road here and there. Our city imposed a curfew as well. I got up early this morning and drove straight to work. I'm actually wearing the same outfit I wore yesterday (and am wearing some underwear I had left in my room that I haven't worn since high school!). I won't see Andrew until 6:30 tonight, and it's killing me. I feel like it's been forever since I've seen him!
When I got here, I was regretting having made such an effort to show up. Apparently Bitch Prof was going on and on to everyone about how I was completely dropping my responsibilities and that I hadn't done anything I was supposed to do while she was out. Actually, I had done all of it. I really have no idea where she was coming out with all this crap. She actually went around asking people if they had heard if I had quit or not since I hadn't gotten anything done and I wasn't there on Friday. Umm....WHAT?? She sent an email to my boss and everything. I went this morning with the massive pile of lists of things she had given me to do and proof that I had done each of them. For example, I was supposed to mail off some FedEx packages. I went and showed him each and every receipt for things I had sent way back on August 2! This woman is crazy, and I have no idea why she has it in for me. That makes two people who have had it in for me in this office. I have no idea why. As far as I can tell, everyone else likes me. I don't know why the hell I have to put up with these crazy people and why I need to let it roll when they start spreading lies about me. It's insane. I was pissed as hell. I could not help but let a few comments out about what I thought of this woman as I talked to my boss. He admitted he had no idea where she got the idea that I hadn't sent these packets out because they obviously weren't here and there were obviously the FedEx receipts for tracking. UGH. I'm so sick of this shit. Just when I was thinking this job isn't the end of the world, I have this bitch trying to get me fired for no good reason when all I wanted to do was stay back in Orlando to help my parents and their neighbors out with all of this mess they have on their hands. I just want to sit down and cry.

My life is now complete. I was just rummaging inside a dumpster.
The cleaning lady threw out our entire book collection because she thought it was trash. I had to go rescue it. Wow.

Well, looks like Charley's going to be paying us a visit here in Gainesville, but I won't be home. I will have continued my streak of never having been in a hurricane despite having lived in Puerto Rico and Florida my whole life. I also found out last night that not even my dad has ever been in a hurricane. Pretty funny considering most people think it's crazy to live where we do because of the hurricanes. You can go nearly half a century without ever experiencing one!
I'm leaving for Orlando straight after work today. We're leaving for Jackie's wedding in the morning tomorrow. How happy I would be if she decides to call it off at the last minute! I have no idea how I'm going to sit there and watch her make the biggest mistake of her life. Usually I sit there all happy and smiley for the couple. I remember walking down the aisle myself to a sea full of familiar, smiling, misty-eyed faces and feeling so right and certain about the man waiting for me at the end. I know no one is happy about this wedding. My aunt cries about it every night. My uncle was trying a while back to figure out a way to arrange for some sort of prenump without involving Jackie too much. My cousins are depressed. My grandmother is in denial. Seriously, I don't know how anyone in attendance is going to muster up a convincing smile. My degree in acting isn't that good. I wonder why she is so set on this. It's incredible to me. The family consoles each other by telling each other, "Hopefully she'll realize before they have any kids." How depressing is that??

OK, I have a sec...
Oh man, did I ever have a good time! I'll be posting my pictures tonight. I only have a fraction of the pictures Anika has, though. I'll be comibining the two as soon as she gets back to NYC later this week and gets them online as well.
Here's the rundown:
Thursday, August 5
I got up at 3am to head out the door by 3:30am. I wasn't even sleepy! It was amazing to get all the way across town in just ten minutes, although I must say, there were more cars than I would have pictured way out there on the backroads at 4:00am. I got the Jacksonville airport just in time to catch my flight out. I arrived to Milwaukee a little after 10am local time and waited for Lane's flight, which got in at 12:50. From there, we rented the car and drove out to Madison to check into our hotel and wait for Anika. After we picked her up from the airport, we headed into downtown Madison, which I must say, is quite nice. We took a ton of pictures, especially around the Capitol building, which was truly amazing. We walked up and down the streets, strolled by the lakes, ate at a Turkish restaurant and hung out a long bar. It was very nice.
Friday, August 6
We headed back into downtown Madison to find a diner that Lane had heard about which was the ultimate greasy spoon. Getting there just confirmed my suspicion that Madison has the most confusing streets I've ever driven on. We got more than a bit lost and kept going in circles and circles. Finally, we got there, and it was worth it. I had some spectacular chocolate chip pancakes. Mmm!! We walked around some more, seeing more of the town, before we decided to head out to shop for our weekend of camping. We found a discount supermarket which was perfect and strange all at the same time. Perfect because it was so cheap and we just wanted junky camp food anyway. Strange because it didn't have a very complete assortment of items (we had to stop again at Target later) and because we realized when we got out to the car that they provided us with no bags for our food. We just kind of had to chuck it in the truck.
We headed out for the campsite and enjoyed the Midwest scenery. I must say, however, that all this talk about cows is nothing but hype. I see more cows in Gainesville than I saw during the whole weekend. We saw nothing but corn. We declared that it should be renamed to the "Just Corn State." We arrived to the campsite after a predictably confusing drive to keep consistency with the rest of the trip. It was great to pull in, however, and see all of these familiar faces I had never met before. Adam and two of his friends were staying in the site next to us, and Christina, Jim, and Dawn were staying on the site with the three of us. SO much fun!! Several people came by to say hi, and we finally made our way over to the group site. I was already doing my whiskey thing and was quite happy meeting all of these Nancies for the first time (some for the second time). We weren't there for long, though, before the rangers came out to enforce the 11pm quiet time, so we had to head back out to our site.
Saturday, August 7
It was nice to hang out in our site in the morning. Bacon and eggs were cooked out on the stove top that Adam brought. It was lovely to just sit there, eating and chatting. We headed out to the parking lot around 2pm to begin the tailgating. It was the highlight of the weekend. Anika and I got totally drunk. We acted like total idiots, laughing so hard we were crying. In all this craziness, I suddenly realized that my face felt a bit lopsided. I asked people, and they confirmed that, yes, I had turned suddenly lopsided. The bug that had the courtesy to bit right on the corner of my eye caused an allergic reaction that caused me to swell up an force my left eye half shut. Terrific. Exactly the kind of first impression I wanted to make on all these people I was meeting. Fortunately, I was drunk enough not to care, and actually pointed it out to everyone I saw.
The show kicked butt. I had such a great time. When I walked out, though, I felt like there had been something missing from the show. No huge, tousing number to get the crowd going crazy. When I got back to the site, I was informed that they played So Much to Say-->Superfreak-->Too Much. Oh yeah, I had gone on my emergency search for water to prevent my severe dehydration. Shoot! I missed the highlight of the show! Ok, so it would have probably been the best show I'd been to if I had only been able to be there the whole time! This is why I never like to get drunk at shows!
Getting out of the parking lot was a nightmare. It took us about three hours. Incredible. We were basically parked in line, and there was no way to get out of there. Anika fell asleep in the back and woke up two hours later, only to find us maybe 50 feet from where we had been before. Wow.
Sunday, August 8
We got a considerably slower start on Sunday than we had the day before, recuperating from our night. We finally located some working showers, but they sprayed us with the most violently frigid water I have ever showered with. Wow! Afterward, I went out birding with Lane, which was actually a very enjoyable time. Saw some birds I had always wanted to see like goldfinches and cedar waxwings. It was a beautiful day, too.
We headed over to the tailgating a little later than Saturday, but we managed to get just as drunk in the shorter time frame. Actually, Anika and Lane managed to get WAY drunker than Saturday! Wow! As soon as I realized what was going on, I knew I had to sober myself up or else there was no way we could get to the campsite! The concert was not nearly as good as the night before and the people who were around us were not nearly as good as the ones from before. Poor Christina and I marvelled at the sights and sounds around us. Nights like that probably confirm to her why she never wants to sit in the lawn again! It was still enjoyable, don't get my wrong! Dave is never a bad thing, and I finally got my Seek Up as well as a great Jimi Thing.
We left before the final encore like fairweather fans so that we could get out of the parking lot quicker than on Saturday. Actually, I was glad that we did because it only took us about 15 minutes! We had enough time to hang out by a campfire and talk for a few hours into the night.
Monday, August 9
We woke up bright and early to make sure we could get to the Milwaukee airport in time for Anika's 10:20am flight. We seemed pretty much on track until we couldn't find the car keys! WOW! That scared the crap out of me. We were looking and looking, and they were no where to be found. Finally, they showed up INSIDE the trunk, of all things! Thank goodness we hadn't locked everything all up! We headed over the airport, and about halfway there, I realized that I had taken the most indirect route there. I had to haul ass to get her there on time, but we did and she made it! Thank goodness. Lane and I returned the car and hung out waiting for our flights out.
I'd write a lot better if I wasn't so exhausted. I can barely think straight. I had so much fun and hardly any sleep. It's hard to sleep on that hard ground in those tents with all these noises outside. Then again, I didn't even sleep well in Madison. I guess I was just too excited. When I post my pictures, I'll write better descriptions of all the fun I had. It was an amazing time! I wonder if I'll ever be able to have an experience like this again!

Can't....think....
Thanks a lot Dave. Just when I had a million things to get done today in order to fly my ass to BFE to see you, you send me more news that sends my head spinning.
I'm currently trying to contact the assistant director of the O'Connell Center. I work with her on occassion since we schedule several of our dance classes in the facility. I'm hoping she tells me the best way to get good tickets, and possibly can offer me some sort of perk?? Yeah right, but I wouldn't get anything if I didn't try!!

24 hours from now, I'll be mid-air, heading to Wisconsin. Woohoo!!
I intended to finish packing last night, but that didn't happen. Oops. I have to get to bed tonight way early since I have to get up at 3am. (OUCH!) So the plan: Come home, maybe a quick workout, eat leftovers, finish packing, and get to bed. If I could fall asleep by 9pm, I'll be happy.
In the meantime...SO MUCH WORK!! I've never had this much work, of course!! Why must they make going on vacation stressful??

Wow. I can be beyond organized when it's something I actually care about. Not only am I almost done packing for this trip, but I have also just printed out all of the information I will need: Lane's flight info, Anika's flight info, Hotel Reservation, Car Reservation, Directions from Milwaukee Airport to the hotel in Madison, from the hotel in Madison to the Madison Airport to pick up Anika, from the hotel in Madison to the campsite, from the campsite to the concert venue, from the concert venue back to the campsite, and from the campsite to the Milwaukee Airport. It's all separately stapled and held together neatly with a binder clip. I impress myself sometimes. Maybe I should make a cover sheet for it?? Ha!
Last night was great. On the way home from work, I stopped to buy Andrew a little ice cream cake. I had a little time before he got home, so I decorated the house with streamers and a "Happy Birthday" banner outside the front door. I had all his presents neatly arranged (see, once again) and waiting for him when he walked in. He seemed to love all the presents, even though I didn't succeed in getting him what I wanted to. I got him a Buffalo Bills license plate frame for his car, the DVD of the first season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, six Gators cups, and two Playstation games (a baseball one and a football one). I made him his favorite breaded chicken that he loves, and then wore his favorite pj of mine! ;)
I realize I didn't say anything about this past weekend. We had a great time in Orlando. My cousins Sando and Robert were visiting. It is so funny because I remember each of them being born so clearly, but they are little adults now. Sando is 15, Robert is 14. It was neat to talk to them like real people. They're really cool, actually! They cracked me up. Saturday night we all went out and got together with some friends of my dad who were visiting from Mexico, and we surprised Andrew by getting the restaurant to sing him Happy Birthday! :) It was a pretty fun time. Sunday we had a big brunch, Andrew opened his presents from my parents (nice clothes), and played Monopoly. Fittingly enough, Andrew kicked our butts!
I had some terrible nightmares last night. It was so strange. It was like I was watching some sort of show about freak accidental deaths, except that I was there for each one. There were people blowing up into pieces, people falling and breaking their necks, etc. The images were so violent, one after the other. It's so disturbing that all of that is in my head!! I woke up, and I just kept seeing them. It was so nice to have Andrew to cuddle with after all that, and he scratched my head for me until I fell back asleep. He's so wonderful. I don't know what I'd do without him!
And now all I can think of it what happens the day after tomorrow!!

Oh my gosh! Alpine is getting so close!!
Unfortunately, I have A TON of stuff to do at work before I leave. I just got this huge project given to me for our department's accreditation AND I realized that I'm not going to be here on Monday when the grades are due for the summer. So, I'm going to be busy as hell. I will choose to look at the bright side though: maybe it will make the days go faster! :)
Today is Andrew's birthday. 28! He was upset yesterday about "getting up there" in years. Ha ha! 28 is not old, but I'm always teasing him about him being old, so I guess I should stop. I finally got him birthday presents that I think he'll like, but they aren't as special as what I had hoped to get him. Oh well. I'll be cooking him some breaded, crispy chicken tonight like he wanted me to along with fresh corn on the cob and a few other things. I'll stop on my way home today and get him a cake too.
Last night I dreamt that I was cooking some amazing lobster. I didn't know how to cook it, though, since I never have before. I was improvising pretty well in my dream, however. Mmm, it tasted so good. I can't believe how many dreams I have that are about cooking in great detail. I mean, I think of every ingredient and each individual step, etc. Now I want lobster. I don't know that I'll be getting it any time soon, though! :(
I'm so friggin' excited that the trip is this week!!
