·Kicks and Braxton Hicks·
I think I'm going to have my hands full with this baby. I only just started feeling it move less than two weeks ago. I would only feel it maybe once or twice a day. Now I'm feeling it what seems to be every hour! And I'm not even that big yet! Sometimes it wakes me up at night too. Does not bode well for the activity level of this child!!
Also, I just put two and two together and realized that some other weird sensations I've been having are actually Braxton Hicks. You're not supposed to feel them until later, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. All of a sudden I feel this tightening, rolling sensation in my lower abdomen maybe twice a day. It doesn't hurt, but it's uncomfortable mostly because it's just so weird. I'm doing everything early in this pregnancy. First-time moms aren't supposed to feel the baby move until sometime between week 20 and 22 (I'm just now getting to week 18), and Braxton Hicks aren't usually felt until the third trimester. My doctor told me that due to my build, I would feel things earlier than most, but these Braxton Hicks I could certainly do without!

·Yet Another Reason I'm Realizing I'm Old·
I realize I'm old when I determine that what I want most for Christmas this year is this:

The Dyson vacuum cleaner. Of course, it's ridiculously expensive. Just on my dream list, I suppose!

·The Family Car·
We're realizing that with the amount of driving that we do to visit family all over the place, we're going to probably need to replace one of our cars for a larger one. If we didn't have Lucky, I'd say we should just stick to the sedans we have, but carting him around all over the place takes up most of our room already between him, his crate, and his food. Add to that a carseat in the back and a stroller, diaperbag, baby food, an extra bag of clothes, and a portable crib and, well, we need a new car!!
This past Friday, while my mom braved the crazy shoppers, the rest of us went to a car show at the convention center. This is the first time I've ever had to really look at other cars. I've never really cared much one way or another as long as the car was safe and got me where I needed to go. My first car was 14 years old when I got it, and the one I drive now is turning ten this year. Now, all of a sudden, I was picky as could be. I was so sure I wanted a wagon because I hate SUVs. I figured that the wagon would give me the car with the extra room in the back. While it was true in several cases, it was not true in all, and I found that it actually wasn't quite what I was looking for when I compared to some of the less truck-y SUVs.
Though I could be happy with probably about a dozen of the cars I saw, two stole my heart away:
The Acura MDX
and the Chrysler Pacifica

Both of these SUVs are actually car-based designs, rather than truck-based, so the ride is smoother and safer. Both have better gas mileage than their true SUV counterparts too! What sold me most were they had the best safety ratings possible and, surprisingly enough, both had collapsable third row seats. I had never thought of the third row seats as a big deal, but I realized that if we own this car for another ten years (and we have always hung on to our cars as long as possible!) and have three kids, it's going to be a very exact fit. If we ever have to give any of their friends a ride, voila! The third row magically appears and we all ride together in one noisy, crazy car.
I can't believe I'm actually having to think like a parent. My dad kept wanting to show me the mini-vans, and while I was admittedly wowed by them, I just can't break down and consider myself a mini-van driver. Let me cling to some semblance of myself as I bring children into this world, please! Getting a big car is already a big enough step for me to take!

Holy crap, am I really about to have my own child??? I forgot to shower my own self yesterday. Do I really need to be in charge of keeping another human being alive when I can barely keep myself together? Did God really think this was a good idea???

·Happy Thanksgiving!!·
I'll be heading down to Orlando soon to spend Thanksgiving with the fam. My contribution: Carrot Cake! Mmm! I haven't made it in forever, and it's the best carrot cake in the world, if I may be so humble.
We'll be coming back Saturday for our final farewell to...

FSU game is the best way to go out with a bang. I think I'll shed a tear or two toward the end when it hits me that this is really my last Gator game ever. :( If we lose, I'll shed more than a tear or two. Catch the game on TV! It's always a good one, and think of me!!

·Way Back Wednesday·
Today's Way Back Wednesday topic is family. Now, coming from the Puerto Rican, Catholic family that I do, I have an awfully large family. How large exactly?
This large:

And that's only my paternal grandmother's branch of the family. There's more where that came from! That picture was taken in 1989 when I was just ten years old. You can spot me as one of the dozen girls in the front row in a poofy pink dress! ;)
Here's a very handsome picture of my immediate family on my wedding day. As is evident from the previous picture, our little branch was the smallest on the family tree with a modest two children.

I can't believe I'm about to be adding to the family myself!

·Triumph at Last!·
Today I finally got my first retailer! I've called a couple of the nicer gift shops in town and today, after only my second presentation, I have a shop who definitely wants to sell my stuff. In fact, the owner wants my stuff in stock there ASAP no later than Dec. 3rd! What a great feeling! I'm so happy with myself, not only for making good, quality products that people like when they see, but also for going out there despite how scary it is!
I admit, even this meeting that ended up very well for me had some scary moments. I had some very challenging questions that I was not expecting. I had to admit a few times that I was new at this and was figuring out my way. Very scary, but fortunately, she was impressed enough with my samples that she was willing to give me some space in her store to sell my products by commission. It's a very cute shop in one of the most popular, upscale, pedestrian friendly areas in town. She wants my stuff there by Dec. 3rd because there is a very popular craft festival all along the street and she says it's her busiest time since a lot of people stop in.
So, between now and then, I have a lot to do. I have to create a display, a small catalog, and an ordering system. I'm so excited!
I had a great weekend, too. My grandmother from Puerto Rico was in Orlando, so we went down there to see her. I love her so much! We had a great time. It was nice to see her again for this little bonus trip since I only get to see her two or three times a year. She's my hero!

·Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood·
I keep trying to convince myself that we live in a nice neighborhood. After all, home prices have doubled since we moved in. That doesn't happen in crappy neighborhoods. We couldn't afford to live here if we were looking to buy nowadays, so that makes it pretty nice too, doesn't it? Well, I don't know how everyone else who lives here ended up here, but they do remind me it's not so nice. I mean, very rarely have I ever felt unsafe here, even walking Lucky by myself at 2am. It's not that type of bad neighborhood. It is a neighborhood, though, where the guy across the street with the hugest beer belly in town smokes out front shirtless with faded tattoos and shaggy hair for the world to see. It's a neighborhood where people honk their horns to announce that they have arrived, no matter what time of day or night. It's a neighborhood where you have to wait for the college guys to feel like temporarily halting their game of football in the middle of the street to let you through while you watch the ball hit every car in sight. Various torn up couches and such will appear on the curb at least once a month, presumably to be picked up by trash collection, only apparently they never call it in and it stays there for weeks at a time. Just this morning, while I breathed in the beautiful, crisp air, took in the sun and the sounds of the rustling leaves in the wind, I noticed one of the neighbors' cars with shoe polish on the rear window reading, "HONK IF YOUR [sic] HORNY"

·Hunger for the Great Light...of the Refrigerator!·
Ever since my 24 hour nausea and dizziness faded away a little over a week ago, I have been overwhelmed by the most incredible hunger I have ever known. Now, I'm no stranger to hunger. I've always had quite the healthy appetite. I never leave the house without at least two granola bars shoved into my purse because if I go too long without food, it's disaster. I shake, I get dizzy, I get weak. When I do eat, I can out-eat any girl I know and even many men. I'm just the type to need a lot of food.
Well, this hunger of the past week is NOT the same kind of hunger I've had all my life. First of all, it comes much more suddenly now than I'm used to. It starts off the same, but within five minutes of my stomach not getting the attention it is demanding, I come down with the shakes. Only this time, I'm talking more like convulsions. I can't think and I go into a kind of mania that kind of scares me. I start talking to myself if I'm by myself. I have no choice but to drop whatever I'm doing immediately and run to the kitchen. I then proceed to clumsily fumble all over the pantry and fridge (remember I'm convulsing, so I'm not very coordinated) muttering myself, "Oh my God. Oh my God. I have to eat. I have to eat. What do I eat? Oh my God." And not just any tasty snack will do when I get into these crazes. When I am in this state the only thing to do is to spot the item that will get in my stomach the fastest. That rules out anything that needs to be prepared or heated up in any way. Even 30 seconds in the microwave is too long. It has to be something I can literally SHOVE into my mouth instantly. I need to have other things to follow lined up as well.
Yesterday, I downed about 15 carrot sticks before the 90 seconds on a full plate of pasta was up. I wolfed down the plate, which was probably the equivalent of two servings, and still found myself looking for more. I tried to top it off with just a granola bar, but ended up having to add some pizza rolls too.
Now, I've read in all these pregnancy books that you only need about 200 more calories a day when you're pregnant. Ok. I can comprehend this intellectually with complete conviction and understanding. However, when that hunger strikes me, it seems ludicrous. Honestly, it's insane. Just insane. It's uncontrollable and beyond all reason. I'm trying my best not to go overboard. I've stopped buying ice cream, we've never been the types to keep cookies and chips around the house. I'm making every effort to keep healthy stuff in stock so that when I gorge myself, it's usually on something healthy. It's getting harder and harder to maintain this, though. Carrot sticks, apples, granola bars, and cereal only go so far in chasing away the muttering convulsions. The pizza rolls were my savior yesterday. What am I supposed to do? The quantities, I know are beyond my control. Eating less than I am is honestly impossible. It's hard enough to maintain normal functioning with the huge amounts I'm consuming now! So do I give in to these cravings? I've already gained 4 pounds in the first three months, which is perfectly on track, but I'm worried what will happen if I give in to the urge to shove an endless supply of ice cream and nachos down my throat. I'm only supposed to gain 25-30 pounds in this pregnancy, according to my doctor. I don't know. I just don't know. I mean, if normal women get huge appetites when they're pregnant, what's someone to do who already started off with a pregnant woman's appetite?

·Way Back Wednesday·
Today's Way Back Wednesday theme is big, dorky glasses from the past, a subject I know all too well. I can't believe I actually decided to keep any pictures from that part of my life. I present to you, my beloved pink glasses that I sported from 4th grade through 6th grade:

They were beauties, weren't they?? *Shiver* I eventually realized that the pink monster was probably getting in the way of my social life and upgraded to the more sensible (yet still huge) metal frames halfway through 6th grade and wore them through 8th grade when I FINALLY was allowed to get contacts:

Now, my glasses are only for lazy days, sick days, or hangover days, as is apparent in this photo taken just a few months ago:

When I got these about two years ago, I came to terms with the fact that I was never going to look anything but geeky in glasses. Therefore, I decided to go for the geek chic look. Whether or not I have the chic part covered is definitely up for debate!

·Mental Image·
I just got the coolest mental image ever. I can't wait to see my baby dance. Have you ever seen how adorable babies are when they bounce and flap their arms to music?? I can't wait to see MY baby dance to MY music. I will cry for sure.
I read that not only do babies respond to music in utero, but they actually recognize tunes after a while! If you play a song they've never heard, they stay really still, but if you play a song they've heard a lot, your tummy will start bouncing with activity! Maybe my baby will be able to call a DMB tunes before the first note is done too.

·16 Weeks·
That's right, I'm entering my fourth month! Wow! I also can't believe how much bigger I've gotten in just the last week. The clothes that fit me last week don't now. I've started wearing the more full-blown maternity stuff now, even the panel pants that get hiked way, way up.

ps..I'm noticing that I'm not wiping my mirrors down as well as I thought I was when I clean them. The things flash brings out!

·Random Bits·
Fox sucks. Arrested Development is the best show on television. So sad.
I think I felt the baby move last night. I was cooking and when I leaned up against the kitchen counter (which hits right about where the baby is now), I felt a strange little double thud. Not sure if it was my imagination because it feels weird to have things against that area since it's so different now or if it really was the baby and I could feel it better because it was pressed up a little more.
I read yesterday that the baby is already over 5 inches long. It's almost as big as my hand! It's weird to think that there is something that big inside me that wasn't there before. It feels different to walk around, sit, stand, sneeze, etc. because I always feel like I have a softball or something inside me. It doesn't hurt, but it's there. Bizarre.
Well, after much build-up, I finally had my first sales presentation this morning. I went to a pretty neat shop. The owner was warning me all along that she has very limited space and is not looking for new merchandise, so I wasn't expecting much out of this. However, she was, I think, geniunely impressed with my products. Unfortunately, she is closing the store in March and retiring, so she really had little incentive to figure out how to make my stuff fit, but I think had her circumstances been different, she would have bought from me. As it was, she was there with me and came up with all sorts of ideas. She loved my stuff and I told her she was free to keep one of my samples.
One of the things I brought was a pint glass I had made for one of my friend's brother who is in a band in Ohio. I transfered their logo, which is this really cute caricature of the bandmembers, onto the glass. Well, she was so impressed with how it turned out that she asked if she could keep that so she could show it to her daughter's best friend. Her daughter's best friend is married to one of the bandmembers of Sister Hazel. She was going to see her this week, so she was going to get back to me to see if they would be interested in merchandising. We'll see how that goes! It'd be pretty fun.
I'm not really expecting much of anything to come out of all of this, but it was a confidence booster to see my products so well-received. I'm hoping other shopkeepers in town (who won't be retiring soon) will see things her way too.

·Way Back Wednesday·
Today's Way Back Wednesday theme is outdoorsy stuff. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not very outdoorsy.

You think this looks outdoorsy? That's El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico. It's only about 45 minutes from my grandparents' apartment in San Juan, and I still had never been before this visit that Andrew made to meet the family. We just drove along the main road for less than an hour and got out to take this very cool, "extreme" looking photo. Note that we are all wearing jeans and regular shoes. We weren't planning on doing any roughing, and we certainly didn't.
That's why it came out of left field to my high school friends when I called them up and asked them if they wanted to come camping in Wisconsin with me (oh yeah, by the way, for a DMB concert). They happily came aboard, and so began my first (and, to date, only) camping trip ever! It was actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be! I could have done with cleaner bathrooms, cushier bedding, hot showers, and more food, but I was able to drown all my cares away in alcohol, thankfully!

·Nerves·
I'm going to be making my first sales call today. I'm all nervous about it. I hope it goes well and I'm not exposed as someone who has absolutely no idea what she's doing!!
By the way, never commented on Saturday's Gator game...AWESOME!! Incredible!! Amazing!! So fun.
Bad part: I was supposed to be in Atlanta seeing David Gray on Sunday. *Sigh* So sad. I am doubtful there will be anything rescheduled. :(

·Halloween Came At Last!·

Last night's party went pretty well. A few of the people who said they were coming flaked out, so we peaked at around 35 people. It was crowded, but not uncomfortable, fortunately. There were some really great costumes there!
Here are all the pictures!
I ended up wearing the stupid headpiece after all. I colored my hair orange and did it up like Wilma, so it didn't look quite so stupid in the back. I'm still not convinced it was the best, but it was a hit at the party nonetheless!

·Fixer-Upper·
Well, it seems I may have smoothed out all of my business screw-ups from yesterday. I called the county and told them my occupational license application was on its way. The one I was more terrified of was the Department of Revenue. How do I just tell someone over the phone that, well, I'm just an idiot and please do anything to save my ass. I began explaining the situation very methodically over the phone, complete with a timeline of dates. Eventually, I decended into the helpless, clueless little girl thing and emphatically expressed how I thought I'd have more time to figure out what I was supposed to do with all of these various DR-15CS and DR-11 forms that look like Sanskrit to me. Professional? No. Did it save my ass? Yes. And honestly, I can't even pretend it was an act. There were tears just building up and waiting for the guy to say I'm going to receive a fine and citation for non-compliance. Instead, he said, "Well, since you only had two sales in the July-September period, both in the last half of September, I'm going to go ahead and deactivate you for that period. You should report those two sales in your October-December report." WHAT? REALLY?? I breathed a sigh of relief loud enough to be heard all the way in Tallahassee. Now I have until January to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do with these things!
So today is our Halloween party at last. I'm going to be baking, cleaning, decorating, and creating mixed CDs all day. While I was putting together both Andrew's and my CD's, I was thinking to myself what a freaking great music collection we had. I made a list of nearly 150 songs that would be great for a multi-disc party set. I expressed my glee to Andrew about how great our music was. Everything from AC/DC to Parliament Funk, David Bowie to Dave Matthews Band, Fugees to Guns N Roses, Doors to James Brown, Led Zepplin to Beastie Boys, REM to Talking Heads.
"We're so old," was his response.
"What do you mean?? This is awesome music! Everyone's going to love it!"
"Do we have anything on there that was made this millenium?"
"Umm..." I flipped through the entire collection, slowly realizing what he was saying. "Wait! Wait! I put in that Outkast song from the CD Jeff and Hilary gave out at their wedding!!"
Umm...yeah, the only post-2000, party mix-worthy music we had was from a mix CD we got from someone else!
I joked and said, "I guess the average age of our music collection is about 15 years old." Pause. "Wait. 15 years ago was 1990??? Umm, maybe a little more then."
Ouch! We are old! Hey! It's timeless music, people!! TIMELESS!!!

·Screw Up·
I'm such a screw-up. I thought I had everything done when starting the business. Well, apparently, I forgot to file for an occupational license of all things (as opposed to the occupation permit I had filed), so now I'm being threatened with a huge penalty if I don't comply by the end of the week. Also, I'm just getting around to finally sitting down and understanding this tax stuff. I had a letter postmarked October 15, and I just realized it had a filing deadline of October 20. I didn't think the deadline would be so immediate since you only have to file quarterly and I hadn't even received my tax number certificate yet on the 15th. So anyway, now I'm in trouble with the Florida Department of Revenue. I'm paying another penalty for that.
AND ALL OVER NOTHING BECAUSE I HAVEN'T EVEN MADE ANY MONEY!!!!!!
Someone shoot me. Why did I get into this?

·Way Back Wednesday--WTF??·
Today's theme for Way Back Wednesday is "When is Mama Duck going to finally pick the perfect theme for this picture?" Well, the theme I'm picking for Mama Duck is "WTF Is Going on in This Picture???"
I present to you my submission for WTF??

Answer: I'm making out with a severed head. What does it look like?? ;)
I was supposed to be this warrior princess in a show and got to carry a severed head onstage. Backstage, we named him Joe and everyone suspected he and I had a secret affair going on since I always sat him on my lap and stroked his hair. Joe and I came out for the world to know on closing night. Unfortunately, that's also the last time I saw Joe. :)
ps...check out how long my hair used to be! That's my real hair! I hadn't done it up yet for the show apparently, so it looks stupid, but wow was it long!

·Still with the Halloween·
I'm sorry if I'm just delusionally biased, but this godson of mine is just ridiculously cute.

Our Halloween party's official RSVP count has gone past the 30 mark. 18 evites are still outstanding. Most of those evites actually belong to couples, and one of those oustanding couples asked if they could bring their cousin, so I assume they are going to be RSVPing for 3. Point is, a party of over 40 people is almost a certainty. Only SIX people on our invitation list turned us down. SIX! Last year it was almost half! Either word got around about how cool our party was last year or we did too good of a job picking a convenient weekend. We're now wondering if we should run out and buy decorations for the guest room on the first floor to encourage overflow people to hang out there so that they are not all packed into our living room. Hopefully it will be nice out so that people hang out on the patio too. I have no clue how 40 people will fit in our house. I have no clue how all those cars will fit in our neighborhood. I had no clue we even knew that many people in town.
And I can't even drink amidst the madness!! Last year, I did quite well for myself as a hostess on Jello shots alone. This year, I see myself parked at the food table shoveling Rice Krispie Treats in my mouth all night.

My business website gets the most ridiculous hits sometimes. It's amazing what some people look for sometimes. I have as my keywords things like "personalized," "engraved," "gifts," etc. Well, just from this past week, here are some of the searches that have been done that landed people on my site:
Personalized Pyrex
Monogram Screwdrivers
Personalized Stapler
Personalized Ax
Personalized Peas
...and my favorite from just last night: Unique Flyswatters
